What sort of 'Collector' are you?

I find myself jumping between ideas but mainly go to armies that I like the look of. So far I've got Slyvaneth and 1000pts of Deepkin and I'm about to start DoK. That said, I have a bad habit of not finishing things and as I'm running out of space I'm planning on making DoK my "last" army for some time whilst I work on expanding what I have.

Id like to be able to field multiple lists for each army I collect eventually as I'm the type of person that likes variety (in all games, I'm the guy that can never decide a main because everything looks fun.

I buy to convert, no model is safe from my clippers and knife.  I ised be very flaky between projects, end times didn’t help, nor the lovely Heresy. Now im happily settled with three chaos Factions, Trolls, Gavespawn and Slaves to Darkness. I don’t play so care little for army lists, though I used to spend hours, upon hours drafting lists way back when. I may do this again for fun.

In everything I do - be it gaming or otherwise - I tend to choose one thing only and hit it hard. For example, in, say, fighting video games I would always play one character only, and become something of a specialist.

In terms of wargaming, the final destination for this behaviour is inevitably one single massive army, which is something I like visually. However, AoS obviously isn't currently setup for playing this kind of army.

Back when I started the hobby, I was very much someone who would grab a few kits for an army, paint and play it for a few months, and then move on.  This changed until I settled on an army that I just fell in love with.

Nowadays, I spend a fair bit of time studying the game system, the armies, the narrative, and possible paint schemes, before I even consider dropping any money on new models.  I still have a bit of my sampling mentality, but it is far more subdued than in previous years.  Partly because I am more picky about what I collece, and partly because I don't have the time or budget to bounce between projects anymore.

My Ironjawz are my primary AoS army at the moment, but I have a clear goal in mind for army composition and what models to get for it since I played them exclusively for over a year.  Going forward, I'm going to take this mindset:  pick an army, play it, and master it from a gaming and collecting perspective.  I hope to have a large visually impressive army that I enjoyed my time with playing, one that my kids will someday appreciate and hope to inherit from me.

I started with Orc and Goblins, namely Night Goblins. It was Squigs and Trolls that drew me in. I played Dark Elves in 6th edition when they were terrible, up through 7th and dropped them when they became one of the "big 3" of the tournament meta at that time.  I then went on to collect Chaos Dwarfs, and later Tomb Kings.  I'm an unintentional hipster in that I like to play the army that everyone thinks is terrible/no one plays. The problem here is that because said armies usually don't have much player interest GW ends up squatting them eventually. So I have been trying to condition myself lately to choose one army and stick to it through the edition. It looks like 2.0 will have me in the Kharadron Overlords boat for a while. I typically only collect one army and fully immerse myself in everything about that faction.

You could always still run your Dark Elves again. They’re still pretty bad now so nobody uses them! Yay hipster!

But they look cool and I pray they don’t get squatted but instead get a sick Battletome and some sweet new minis and stuff.

Why’s everyone want the old armies to die? Some of us still like regular Aelves, Dwarves and Humans. There can simultaneously exist cool new Aelves (Idoneth Deepkin) and still keep the old Aelves and bring them into the modern era.

It’s like Warcraft: They have Night Elves, Nightborne, Blood Elves and Void Elves... but most people just play the typical blonde haired fair skin Blood Elves anyway haha. Lots of people like regular Elves.

Anyway, here’s hoping Dark Elves get good again because they’re an army I mean to get someday, alongside Slaves to Darkness and Beasts of Chaos for a table top sized version of the Chaos Blood Bowl Team (which is mostly just beastmen with some chaos warriors and a Minotaur lol)

Army wise, I've got maybe 1/3 of the factions going, but the pattern is the same. I try to find 1-2 armies in each Grand Alliance (need to work on Destruction next), try to visualize a paint scheme so each has a different overall color on the tabletop, and then jump in and over a couple months buy 2-3,000 points of units, trying to collect all units but not going whole hog on battleline. As I buy an army I focus on building and priming all of them. Then they go into a box top - usually a GW sized one - and then they might sit a few months as I collect another army. Over time I go back then and start painting, at least enough for Skirmish, SOH, or 500 point battles. This works out the general painting scheme, but if I get bored I start painting (or building) another army. I might bounce back and forth, but ultimately I reach critical mass on an army and make a big push to finish the rest of them. Then they go back in the box, to come out for proper AOS battles.

I'm definitely (currently) GWs ideal customer 9 times out of 10 I get distracted by the new shiny, and make a purchase or 5...

I then realise my folly and attempt to recoup some funds by selling some of the stuff online.

It's a chain I'm intending to break, once I've built another Kill Team, purchased Blackstone Fortress, built a Moonclan force, and a Speed Freaks army...

I've always been a painter over a player if I'm honest and still enjoy picking up odd models here and there to paint for the fun of it.  Since AoS hit, I've done a lot more army painting and have both a Bloodbound and Legions army that have seen a decent amount of table time.  Looking forward, I fully expect more armies to be painted up in 3 ~ 6 month periods (realistically I get bored working on something for longer than that), the challenge is finding the right army!

I started with Bretonnia and Lizardmen because that's what came in the box set. ?

But Undead were my first lote. I bought the army package to go along wirh a cool RAFM Zombie Dragon that I had bought at Gen Con.

I randomly picked up a small Empire army off of a buddy. Empire led to Dogs of War, which led to Ogres.

A strong pirate theme led to small forces of Corsairs, Sea Guard, and Dwarves.

Then the End Times hit. I wrapped up a few projects--including buying Nagash--and waited to see what would come next.

Silver Tower is what pulled me in. I now have around 2500 pints of Tzeentch and others.

I returned to the hobby five years ago and i've tended to buy the models that i want to build and paint. Generally anything chaos, but mostly khorne stuff. I've been playing more and more over the last year or so, and ive realised my approach does not lead to competitive armies! So lately i've been putting more thought into my purchases, getting things that will improve my army on the tabletop including buying more than one of something (which i have been loath to do up til now).

I rarely get enticed by the new shiny, as theres plenty in the range i want to buy and i hate buying stuff just leave it on the shelf unopened. Plus its hard to gauge whats coming in the pipeline, so i end up holding onto my money and waiting to see what comes next!

I like having big armies, because I play Stormcast it's a big threat to my wallet...
At the moment I have a lot of unpainted stormcasts and those I've painted are going to be reforged as Celestial Vindicators instead of what they've been, so I effectively restart them. My goal is to have all chambers (mega battalions) being completed in min numbers at once.

But I took a break from SCE obssetion and switched to Flesh Eater Courts, I think I won't go all in for their megabattalion, but instead will collect enough to field any battalion in working numbers (like 3x6 flayers in deadwatch) with some help from magnetisation. And then I'll sell them after a couple of years when I get bored.
I think the FEC aproach is my default for armies that I just kinda like.

Damn, I could have written this:

Dark Elves (Darkling/Privateers) > TK > BCR was my route.

I eventually decided that Dark Elves would never get anything for the non-DoK holdover factions and TK were screwed, so went all-in on a "technically-battletome" faction that had my preferred ice/snow theme (I was a Kislev guy as a teenager, before a 16-year hiatus).

That said, I'd hardly call the "technically-battletome" armies (i.e. FEC, BCR, Pestilens, etc.) 100% safe, but no longer feel a constant Sword of Damocles over my faction like I did for TK.

When i started i just painted what I needed. After a 15 year break the modelling and painting has brought me back. Yes I, again, play the game but mostly just to hang out and have a painting goal. Since I supply two thirds of the army’s on a typical gaming day I have the option to flit around between those factions and paint what I like. Sometimes even models for factions I don’t play.

I have a couple of things lying around, such a beasts of chaos and ogors, that have very little backlog left. Goal right now is to finish that and then they are in the best spot ever for me.

A faction I can bust out and play, and paint stuff for that actually gets used! (And no painting pressure because everything is done!)

To elaborate, I initially got into this hobby around the turn of the millennium, with the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine. That established the basis for a fairly hefty Lord of the Rings collection, spanning multiple factions (since the magazine gave you a bit of everything sooner or later). Ironically my friends mostly played 40K at the time, so I also collected Orks. I always intended to get a fantasy army, and liked the look of several, but never got around to it.

I finally got into warhammer fantasy about a decade ago, when I needed some lizardmen for D&D. Initially I was just going to get a couple of kits that I needed for my campaign. However, I really enjoyed painting them, as they gave a very different challenge to LoTR figures. I ended up putting together a full 2000 point army, as I'd not done that for ages.

That got me solidly into fantasy, and over the coming years I decided to expand into the dream fantasy armies I'd always planned to collect back when I was mainly playing LoTR and 40K. I picked up the Battalion boxes for Tomb Kings and Dwarves, and had great fun gradually expanding those collections.

Then a few years later the End Times happened.

I had to scramble to finish my Tomb Kings Collection before they vanished forever. That got me familiar with the second hand market, and I was able to get the TK models I wanted to finish my set. I also started to track down a lot of the older Lizardmen models, which were actually quite abundant on the second hand market, at least compared to TK.

When I'd finished that project I was quite keen to try to get another old fashioned army, as I was still a bit bitter about GW cancelling my favourite range. So I decided to collect Chaos Dwarves, specifically to see whether I could put together an army of out of production models, for the equivalent cost of collecting a brand new Stormcast army. (Result: just about actually, at least until I branched out into the forgeworld range).

Since then I've thoroughly forgiven GW. I've collected a few smaller forces, mainly elves and undead. My latest old model project was trying to collect the specialist wizards for each colour of magic. I started that a little over a year ago, and think I now have a complete set, which I am gradually painting up.

If I like a miniature or there is a chance I can use at least some bits for funky conversions I will probably buy it.

Owning one of a kind is more my style than creating the best armylist.

If I don't like the unit (miniatur or fluff) I search for an alternative.

In the past I bought miniatures for tournament armys, so also many of the same. Nowadays one box is enough. Just for having them.

What to paint... I don't have any plan or system. Totally random.

For me it's changed ( not for the better).

I originally started with AOS near launch, when a GW Store opened in my town.  Loved the idea of just buy whatever you like and play them in a GA.  I liked the stormcast pure paladin approach and went with the starter set.  Then just started adding whatever GA Order/Chaos models attracted me.

Then with Matched play this left me with armies that were not very competitive and not much fun to play with anymore.  Now I just buy stuff second hand for the most part or on discount.

I really enjoy heroes as I don't have much time to paint so painting a lot of models is daunting.

I have a huge collection of Nurgle miniatures that I started during the End Times and have just continually built up. I also went crazy with Astra Militarum during an escalation league earlier this year though only about half on them got painted before I switched back to AoS. I like to experiment with lists and paint a variety of stuff. I also have about a 1k points or less of the following: Beastclaw Raiders, Disciples of Tzeentch, Fyreslayers, Skaven, and on the 40k side: Dark Eldar and two Imperial Knights (Renegade Box).

Typically my pattern will be when a new GHB drops I will run spreadsheets on the stats and points and find what is the most optimal.  Likely that will mean changing my army so I'll post my current army for trade on our local buy/sell page and use the money i get to buy the new optimal army and have our local hobby guy paint it for me.  It takes him about 3-4 weeks to crank out an army for me.

I'm at a point in my life where I don't have much time to paint (kids and career and running events) so I will dive into small scale purchases (Blood Bowl and Shadespire) as I can get those done, and updating older armies with new units or rebasing here or there.

But I've been slowly collecting bits for a SCE army, convincing myself I can do a fast good looking paint scheme  one  day.
