Beastclaw: mournfang vs stonehorn

Hi all,

For making a pure 2k beastclaw list that's (at least somewhat) competitive and thematic: would I be better off going the Jorlbad route, with more mournfang, or the Eurlbad route, with minimum mournfang and more stonehorn riders? Jorlbad makes the mournfang faster and braver, but (almost) army-wide mortal wounds from Eurlbad seem fantastic... especially with 4 stonehorn....

Thoughts appreciated!

I'll definitely check the video out.

The current vibe I'm getting from my research is that BCR kinda stink (with notable recent exception being beasthammer battalion) and that people will complain the army is cheese (even while steamrolling you). Hopefully my interpretation is way off!

Sadly you are right, they are not very competitive in general.  I love playing with and against them but a lot of people do complain about facing them, even while they are beating them.

The Beasthammer is debatably good - it hasn't been seen at tournaments much, it did well with a slightly illegal list recently but I don't think it was a huge event.

My favourite part was where Heywoah explained the Star Fated Arrow.  I've ran through that with a friend who was grievously offended when he didn't one-shot a 6-wound hero with it.

That being said, I'm irrational enough (and enough of a hypocrite) to get annoyed when my Maw Krusha does the same with its own shooting attack ?

Yeah I'd heard the complaint so often I needed to comment on it. Star-Fated Arrow hits on 2s and wounds on 3s with rend -1. If you are shooting some hero/monster with a 3+ save before the rend, you have a 72% chance to fail to deal damage. Odds that I think would be silly to complain about losing to :P

Not to be too negative, but the beasthammer battalion also stinks imo. I honestly believe it won the 3-rounder because illegal list, allegedly playing as fewer drops than it was, lucky cog rolls every game, and opponents with soft lists blundering into turn 1 charge range.

Yea that's probably the right call. The video was very informative btw though it sounds like mournfang are trash. Was really hoping to avoid yhetees (and thundertusks) if possible.

Thanks for watching and thanks for spreading the word Craic. If you're avoiding yhetees due to the ugly finecast sculpts, I feel your pain. I use vargheists with crypt horror arms myself:

As to your thread questions: in a comparison between Jorlbad and Eurlbad, the Eurlbad wins by a mile because its abilities do something. Eurl-Huskard with +1 damage on all his attacks is as damaging as a frostlord, and fishing for 6s to wound helps your damage problem a little (and I do mean a little: only 1-in-12 attacks will do a mortal wound [1-in-11ish on the charge]). Jorl lets you run&charge, but stonehorns already do that so idk what this battalion is good for. If mournfang were slow but powerful like blightkings or brutes I could see the value in giving them +1d6" reach, but as it stands it's like, cool, they charged into combat real fast, now they can get bodied by 140pts of namarti thralls.

So now you have 500 points of tax that turns your huskard into The Hulk and significantly reduces your drops. And I guess when 4 mournfang make all 12 of their attacks you get one extra damage at the end. When compared to just spending 80pts to upgrade the huskard into a frostlord in an otherwise better list, well...

Your stonehorn-centric Eurlbad idea sounds fun to be honest. I played Eurlbad in the few months after GHB17 destroyed everything good about the army and it became completely unplayable - so I'm familiar with the battalion. It's thematic to use a Eurlbad - "the lumpen hammer that tenderizes the foe" as the book says ?and the reduced drops are not to be underestimated for an army that literally needs a double turn to win! The second artefact is huge for beastclaw as well, and although a 490pt tax sounds like a lot, many people run Hunter+6 cats+skal just about for the extra artefact and battleline - and that's already 410! So it doesn't seem so bad now?
