Glad to hear success, @Raptor_Jesues. Vhordrai is a real glass cannon but when he works, he really does. His own quickblood spell in particular really boosts the dragon's output.

You know, with the necromantic bloodline you could go for an ethereal Vhordy through Neferata's spell. Just stack that casting bonus as high as you can and let it rip!

This sounds actually pretty hot, would you say she would be better than mannfred?

With both that spell and her command ability yeah, I'd say she has more utility. With +2 to cast I think she'll be pretty strong, although she eats lots of CP. Give her a try!

Hi All,

I am starting my first death army this year and it is a heavily narrative army, basically the army that fights the final battle in the novel The Undying King by Josh Reynolds. Once finished I want to expand into a Soulblight army as I love the Neferata model and the vampire vibe.

I'm looking for any information/lore about Neferata and the Soulblight Curse, be it from The World That Was, Age of Myth, Age of Chaos, Age of Sigmar or Soul Wars. Looking for websites, novels, novellas, anything that may be of interest. I've looked at a couple of websites already and found differences in the inforamtion that they give, hence my call to the ones who will probably know, you lovely people.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I share your interest and I have read so far:

1) https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/rise-of-nagash-ebook.html

2) https://www.blacklibrary.com/all-products/neferata-ebook.html

First one is big, it covers entire Nagash ascension, so far more than just Neferata but it include many many chapters about Neferata story in Lahmia.

If you are interested in understanding her personality and how she became what she is then you will probably like it as well  :)

Vampire Wars kicks a&? and the Vampireslayer Book from the gotrek and Felix Series also has great insights into the Big N vs Vampire relation.

there is also a short novel „Necromancer“ I think with was pretty cool to read

and of course the nagash series, although I liked some of the ancient fluff of the 90s better, but I‘m old 💀👍

I am reading the vampire wars right now after finishing the Nagash big book.  The Nagash books are alright but very drawn out (and mainly about Nagash and Neferata), I would personally skip the first book if I had my time again and do a quick read up on Nagash's really early start to cover for it.

Vampire wars is also a bit slow atm but it is building up the setting.  Vlad's introduction is utterly ridiculous and I love it.

I haven't read much of the Sigmar lore but from what I gather it is quite a shift away from the old world.  If you want more gothic horror and a better grounded story I would look towards the old world stuff.  If you want slightly fresher work with new ideas I would look towards the Sigmar stuff but keep in mind it is still very young and not overly fleshed out.  Also while technically a continuation of the old world after the events of the end times, I would not consider the Sigmar and the old world lore stuff to really flow together all that well.  Just treat them as separate stuff.

Thanks for the replies, I will look into all the books suggested. I guess I am looking more to the older stuff, where she came from, how she got established, what motivates her. I plan to develop my own story for myself. I currently have a Stormcast army and have written a 32,000 word "history" of the Gregorians stormhost.

I'm looking to do something similar with my Soulblight army, but want some ideas for converting models to pick up its history.

You definitely want to read book 2 and 3 of the Nagash trilogy then, it covers all of the stuff you want from Neferata in the old world.

Have started reading Neferata, but will probably stop and go back to the Nagash books. That said I have already met a guy called Vorag Bloodytooth, Champion of Strigos who leads a group of horse mounted vampire warriors, all in light armour. I've been looking for something to use as Blood Knights, I have 10 High Elf Dragon Princes who will be my Sisters of Sandor. They are High Elf princes who were enlightened (some say corrupted) to the Soulblight Curse by Adhema. Now I could use some Chaos Maurder horsemen as blood knights (some conversion necessary) to represent Vorag and his boys. Could also use Chaos Marauder foot soliders as vampires on foot. Couldn't use them at tournaments but could use them at the club I'm sure.

Hi guys,

I'm pretty new to soulblight and warhammer aos in general and I tried this list yesterday against orcs:

2000 pts

Swift death

-Vordrai -> vile transference

-VLOZD general -> vile transference -> mist form -> ethereal amulette

-VL on nightmare -> amaranthine orb + soulblight artefact to reroll charges once per charge phase

3x5 BK

3 vargheist

Battalion crimson keep

I barely won, I didn't play very well, but I will improve next time.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the crimson keep battalion with soulblight?

If used, how can it be used effectively? I had difficulties utilizing the deep strike function properly...

Do you guys have any improvement ideas? I felt like the vampire lord on nightmare couldn't do ******, but I wanted an extra hero to have the artefact from the battalion...

Thanks !

So the first point of contention is that RAW, Crimson Keep may *not* be technically legal in Soulblight, but its debated and I think its fine.

In terms of usage its a top heavy list, you're putting your eggs in the basket of just over half the army coming on from a board egde, but do remember this can be your opponents edge, which may force him to spread out his forces.

For Artefacts, always take the Sacchirine Goblet, its brokenly powerful. Makes Vampire Lords mini murderers. Natural speed means you usually won't need to reroll charges.

I wouldn't take transferrrance twice either, give the generic dragon pinions. When this double casts from the Locus (9+ natural roll) and you get to move 24" in one turn its really good pressure with Vhordrai and Co.

Thx Charlo,

I didn't read right sacchirine goblet, I will take it next time! As for the deepstriking, it's just that you have to make a 9'' charge when you arrive from your battlefield edge, so I thought sigil of sanguine throne would be good to save command points if I fail a charge.

As for pinions, it's a good idea for sure.

Would you change the command trait mist form? Or you think it's a good one ?

Disagree on the double vile, you don't need to heal one every turn and the other one can cast mystic shield instead.

My problem with the keep is it ends up being basically your entire army.  In a heavy objective scenario you are in deep trouble as you lack the bodies in the board and if you might end up being forced to come on at a bad board edge.

You're not forced to set the battalion up inside the keep. You pick the battlefield edge even if you won't be ambushing from it, so you'll still get the Shadow buff if you deploy on the field. It'll give you less deployment drops, too.

I also like to have multiple transferences around. Together with pinions it does much for any VLoZD. I usually take pinions on the VLoZD and transference on the two following casters and try to keep the dragon within range of one of them. I rarely go with more casters than that but amaranthine orb would be the fourth pick.

@Lorhan, for a VLoZD the mist form is the best command trait you can take, no doubt!

@Death1942 That's what i felt too. I played an heavy objective game and I had to go for heavy aggression to kill the enemy team fast to win. I was forced to deploy in akwards spots since my adversary kept placing he's units to prevent having 9'' empty spaces.

@TMS Thanks, I'll keep the command trait and I will try to not use the deepstrike next time. I will deploy the battalion and finish setting up first (only have like 4 units to deploy) then pick 2nd turn to play.

I picked too vile transference because I play very aggressive with my general and vhordrai, so I wanted a healing option + chalice in case it went south. But I will try to go less aggro next time and perhaps pick something else. Perhaps vile transference on Vampire Lord on nightmare, Pinions on VLOZD and soulpike on vhordrai. Thanks again guys !

(I don't know how to edit my last post)

Then again, is it worth to pay 150 pts for crimson keep battalion if you are not going to use the deepstrike function?

Extra command point is nice, extra artefact also and reroll failed hits on BK very good, but a good player could try and move around this and avoid a battlefield edge.

At the end of the day Blood Knights are not as amazing as they should be.  Death battalions are also not great at all so you are kind of doubling up on some of the weaker aspects of the Legions book.  It is a fun thing to bring out from time to time and if you get your charges off you can have a load of devastating attacks but there are more consistent builds out there.

Thinking of a dumb list to take to a tournamentsl in late Feb. The plan is to play something unique as opposed to something game winning. Note: Realm artefacts are not allowed! I'll run Necromantic for casting bonuses.

VLoZD - General: Mist Form

Neferata

Mannfred

3x5 Blood Knights

This puts me at 1720 currently and a few options to fill the rest of the points:

Option 1) Coven Throne (Saccharine Goblet) + Suffocating Gravetide

Another big piece, excellent buff CA and great unique spell

Option 2) 2x Vampire Lord (one has Goblet)

6+++ Escorts for the BKs/ Objective Claimers, Goblet Lord is a total assassin for the backline

Option 3) Vampire Lord (Goblet), extra CP, Geminids, Quicksilver Swords

Assassin piece, CP for Neferata and more debuffs to take advantage of casting bonuses

Option 4) Mortis Engine, CP, Purple Sun/ Pendulum

Big heal/ damage bomb useful for the hero-hammer, casting bonuses to help get the Sun off. Plays into silly nature of list.

So quite a few! Each one brings different benefits but I can't decide... I'm also looking at fitting Bat Sawms in as they've proven useful in previous games. Alternatively some allied chaff for deathly invo would be nice but ultimately doesn't feel like it fits... Alternatively there's a Court of Nulhamia build in LoB but I prefer full vampire for the uniqueness...

Why not using vhordrai ?

I'm not very experienced but I feel like I would prefer option 3. I'm starting to enjoy that goblet, I didn't know it was that strong before!

Vhordrai is nasty, but I like Mistform on the generic dragon lord too much, also it gives me a big hero to get the command trait, as named characters cannot take them.

Charlo, your lists are always a great source of inspiration, and a reminder for me that this game is not only top tiers lists , all the same. It’s also fun, background, and for an old nostalgic vampire like me choices  in soulblights are not so limited as  I thought. Thank you!

Haha why thank you! Big compliments!

Basically I just like Vampires and the drop from 250 to 200 on the BK's and subsequent drops on Nef/ Mannf have inspired me to experiment.

While no means top tier, Soulblight can certainly run some *unique* lists and with a couple combos 5 Blood Knights are terrifying on the charge, while a mist form VLoZD is maybe the most flexible aggro piece on the game IMO.

I also think the Soulblight Allegiance abilities are *so* close to being great, I think it's just a matter of a 2.0 esque update to make them solid.

Oh and Vargheists change to battleline means you can also run a minimum choice of 450pts... Which leaves you a *lot* of Hero Budget 🦇 Vargheists aren't incredible, but theyre basically flying Ogors with rend that can handily blend hordes, so some lovely synergy with Heroes... Blood for thought 🧛
