The whole army is a Tribute to the '98 Golden Deamon GUO by Paul Thomas.

The book is from the Old Imperial Mage kit.

 

The 3d place GT list is really not competitive... I'm glad he made a good result but I can't really understand how...

2 GUOs and Rotigus and a barebones blight cyst fit nicely just under 2k. Two drops, three artifacts, extra command points. Maybe doesn't kill things fast enough, and it's missing Plague Squall.

Maybe better is a 3x Befoulment with something hard hitting. Go with a unit of 6 plague drones, a sorcerer who can cast blades of putrefaction, and some battleline units. Some minimum battlelines and maybe an endless spell or two for fun. Geminids and Prismatic Palisade? This gives you a big magical toolbox and a big hammer, but it's lacking bodies.

This is my favorite though:

GUO blade and bell (witherstave), GUO sword and flail (endless gift), Rotigus, thricefold befoulment

Thricefold is very competetive besides the current meta with 50% nagash lists which makes it very compilicated due to :

A: Hand of Dust against our big ones

B: no real Chance to win the Magic game against nagash which is the strong side of thricefold befoulment 

On the other hand dont underestimate the dmg output your 3 guys put out in combat with rerolling those 1s and e.g. Breath trait vs hordes

Indeed. Also it gives easy access to two strong Unit Options: Ungor Raiders and Bestigors!

 

Ungor Raiders fulfill three different roles which are rather rare in a Maggotkin Army:

- 6" pre-game movement with large footprint is essential against alpha-strikes

- Cheap bodies with ranged attacks are great objective holders

- Option to Suicide Bomb with 6" pre-game Movement and Battalion

 

Bestigors are a viable hammer unit: For 300 Points we get 60 Attacks 4/3/-1/1 with inbuild run+charge mechanic and +1 to run and charge. Also a nice target for Blades, especially against horde units like Chainrasps/Skeletons/Marauders/Plaguebearers/Whyches... (where they get +1 to hit).

 

Unfortunately BoC Heroes wont get to take Traits, Spells or Artefacts because they are neither Mortal nor Rotbringer or Deamons :(

Centigors, with their speed ,native +1 to hit and loads of attacks, are great targets for Blades of Putrefaction. 

Not to mention benefits from the wheel, GUO bell and shaman for massive movement boost.

That´s not true:

 

1. Thricefold + Blight Cyst = 1140 + 840 = 1980 including Rotigus, 2 GUO, Thricefold Battalion, LoBlights, 3 min units of Blightkings

2. Thricefold + min battleline + Sorcerer + 6 Drones: 1140 (Thricefold Battalion) + 270 (3x 5 Chaos Warriors) + 120 (Sorcerer) + 400 (6 Drones) = 1930

3. Thricefold (1140) + Glottkin + 20 Marauders + 20 Marauders + 40 Marauders = 2000 exactly

 

I like the third one, but I refuse to collect 80 Marauders because (1) they look dull and (2) I don´t like to be a mainstreamer.

Second one (at least something similar) had a good showing on a tournament this summer (forgot specifics). List was Thricefold + 3x 10 Plaguebearers + 6 Drones if I remember correctly (though this comes out to 1900 exactly).

First one I own the models for, but IMO it has too less of a board presence. Maybe I´d rather go

Thricefold (1140) + 10 Blightkings + 5 Blightkings + 5 Blightkings + Gutrot Spume (780 for the whole Blightkings) = 1920

But this list does not have any synergies what so ever, the command ability on the GUO ist wasted.

 

Because I´m still painting my Thricefold I can only tell about smaller games (Thricefold not included, but up to 2 GUOs). The thing I most like is that 30 Plaguebearers squad that is hard to remove and that is able to hold the board center just fine. Things I´m looking for is some hard hitting, fast moving unit to complement the Thricefold + 30 Plaguebearers + additional battleline. Coudn´t find anything suitable right now.

I think best Option Unit wise are the drones as mentioned in list 2 maybe take only 3 and add a daemon prince for activating locus and some punch.

Im trying to play an aggressive Magic game with thricefold incl. Sorcerer or festus with plague squall and a pendulum for even more MW. Only hard counter are all the current nagash lists... 

I agree with the need/benefit of 30 plaguebearers in the thricefold list because you need them to hold the Center or a flank. The 3 big guys should usually Stick togehter and cant be everywhere.

I actually think Terry's thricefold list was about as competitive as thricefold can be. I don't know who he played, but bear in mind that the runner-up of the tournament had no games against Daughters, Stormcast or Death/Nagash.

He played a vanilla Nighthaunt list and beat 5 variations of chaos. Not taking too much away from the winner, who of course played DoK, but it shows its a relatively soft tournament where you can place second without facing any of the 3 hardest lists in the game (Nagash, DoK, Sacrosanct).

Thricefold is gonna be low on bodies and damage output, given how much has to be invested in the 3 big lads. I think Terry probably made the right decision by focusing on board coverage so he wouldn't autolose some of the most common Battleplans, big kudos

Furthermore, as AoShorts mentiones,

Based on gaming score alone, the top 5 would have been:

1. Ben Savva – Daughters of Khaine
2. Robert Sedgeman – Death
3. Gary Percival – Sacrosanct Chamber
4. Nick Thompson – Order
5. Chris Myhill – Order
   
   But by all accounts Terry's Thricefold was incredibly painted
