AoS 2 - Moonclan Discussion

Recommended Posts

Morning all,

For all you squig loving mushroomheads, here is the new thread for discussing Moonclan. With the imminent release of AoS 2 (and a lot of the info already being out there), now is the time for us to start afresh on TGA.

Moving forward, this will be the main thread to chat about and discuss Moonclan in the new edition. I still wholly encourage people to keep their own threads/army blogs within this sub forum and I also think those are a great place to share some photos as I know not everyone frequents the Painting & Modelling section (like me!). But this thread is purely for discussion around the faction, things such as (but not limited to) tactics and list building etc. You all know the drill, we've been doing it on this forum since inception!

For newer players, I would say the older thread could still be worth perusal and whilst it is now locked for further replies, you can find it here - http://www.tga.community/forums/topic/5154-lets-chat-grotz-and-moonclan/

Really excited to see what we can come up with as a community and I look forward to reading all your ideas and thoughts.

Chris

I think that with the Umbral spell portal, both the regular shamans curse of da bad moon and the funoid’s personal spell are really good.

Truth...he has good range on his command ability (i plan on trying him as the general most games) so with that you can have a little shaman coven huddling over the portal slinging spells through. At 80 pts and with a easy -2 to hit im liking the FCS a lot more these days...

What are y'alls thoughts about the boss on cave squig now? I frankly have never used him never found a use for him before, but with all bets off on command abilities is anyone planning on using him now?

Another year without allegiance abilities in the handbook. Could be telling. So let's pretend the rumors of a 2018 moonclan drop is true, what models do you guys think will be refreshed?

I assume the grots  kit will stay the same, it's held up pretty well.  Squig riders and various squig models could definitely use some love.  What could work for a big $$ model? A plastic cast colossal squig? Something more interesting?

@sorokyl

I am a BCR player but I really liked the fungoid cave shaman model and I am considering collecting Moonclan if I like the models. I really hope that they expand on the fungus theme and maybe also use the theme on the squigs. I really don't hope that they just do normal squigs but bigger. I hope they use their creativity and do squigs with mushroom all over the body or spore squigs or squigs with random things on them.  Maybe also different shapes and not the usual balloon shape.

The squig on the fungoid shaman model for example is a different shape.

Maybe also exploding bomb squigs? There are many possibilities. I hope GW tries to get the full potential out of a Moonclan release.

I also thought that Grots in general would be a better "posterboy" faction for Destruction than Ironjawz. Because before AoS, Orks always had Goblins (now Grots) as part of their armies and Ogres also had Gnoblars (which are now also named Grots). I think they are somewhat the connecting link between all Destruction factions.

Because on the one hand we have those big bullies (Ogors, Orruks, Trolls, Giants) and the folks who always get bullied (Grots). So I am in favor of Grots being the posterboy faction for Destruction instead of Ironjawz.

I think we may get:

Refresh new models for Squig herds, Squig Hopper, and Grot Warboss on cave Squig and with Cave squig,

a Fungoid shaman variant maybe on some mount  like the Night of shrouds

A named character on foot

Monstrous Squig Calvary

a Giant Centerpiece monster of some kind.

A grot character named the Fist of Mork.

It depends on how big the release is, it could be DoK size or Nighthaunt size.

I also would like to see Plastic Squig Mangler.

I think that they will continue the grots and fanatics kit, maybe the manglers , I think it could be cool to have a unit similar to the idoneth deepkin’s regaulr troops, with slightly beefy grots that have great swords or bows, but they would all be like the fungoid, with mushroom heads and they would be large due to all the fungus growing on them. I would also like to see these guys mounted on great cave squigs, maybe a sword variant and a fanatic variant.

In addition it would be cool to see some specialist squig units, maybe a giant spore squig with herders, or razadon like squigs.

For the leader I would like Skarsnik back, maybe on a squig maw crusha thing or a moon demon.

Grots and Fanatics are both plastic kits, and they also are good looking kits, that don't  clash with Moonclan aesthetic in any way - so those are a safe bet that we will be kept in the new edition.

Big model centerpieces are things GW enjoys doing, so we will no doubt see one of those.  Could be a huge squig.  Could be something else too - who knows?

GW will do it's best to get rid of any resin.  New plastic characters are a certainty.  They would probably also make a plastic squig kit.  Additionally GW loves to make "dual purpose" kits, that can create multiple unit types.  I would bet that a new plastic Squig kit would be able to make both Cave Squig and Squig Rider kits, just by giving the modeler the option to glue on a Rider or leave him off.

I am just in the process of starting up Moonclan as my 2nd AoS army, so I look forward to anything new :)

I’d love to know if they will add a plastic squig/hopper box. From a newcomer it seems like they add new units rather than replacing older models with newer ones but I’m coming back after many year hiatus.

i really want to start working on squiqs for my force but I’m holding out for now

If they are smart then they will do as you say and make the cave squig set a dual kit with the hoppers.  And if they are really smart they would roll the squig herders into the kit using the hopper rider bodies.  So if you don’t choose to build hoppers then the goblin models pull double duty as the herders.  It would not be hard to do with some creative parts break down.  They could even snake a couple hero models in and then make mounted version of heroes.

I personally expect to see a plastic Mangler Squig kit.  It seems like an ideal set to expand out into 2-3 units total.  If they are creative they could do a lot with that kit.  For instance they could make a unit of individual big squigs - possibly with riders for a unit sort of like Gore Gruntas.  They could roll the warboss on great cave squig into the kit also - or some other hero.  And then the Mangler model could use most of the kit combined.

As it stands now the boss on cave squig is a pretty good character for the price.  He has a nice stat line for a goblin.  His save is not incredible but it is decent and he can reroll it with his shield.  He comes with 6 wounds and has a higher bravery than the other grot heroes - which makes him nice to use since we are still stuck with General Destruction allegiance abilities for Bellowing Tyrant.  He also has a pretty solid set of attacks.

But having said all that, he also has a bunch of garbage abilities on his card.  The bonus to his attacks from rolling doubles to charge will hardly ever trigger and you would be fine to just forget it exists.  If we had a way to trigger that ability reliably then it would be nice.  But we don’t and the chance to score doubles and also make the charge distance means it is hardly ever going to happen.

His command ability is just straight up garbage.  I can’t really overstate how bad it is.  The only decent benefit is for Hoppers.  I can’t say in this new edition that I expect to ever be tempted to use it.

So basically if you want a durable & mobile little combat hero then I think he is pretty decent.

I think I like the guy with the magic spear/wand that shoots stuff, rather than the armored Squig from Forge World.  Magic wand guy has better abilities, and survives longer since he can hang back at range and shoot.

He is better as a character that hangs out with infantry and buffs.  If you want/need a more mobile combat character then the boss on a Squig is not bad.  Depends on the role you want to fill.

I have seen that happen before.  It used to coincide with things being temporarily out of stock.

Seeing as how Nighthaunts and SCE are getting some, I'd love to see moonclan get some unique eternals spell, like a wall of mushrooms, a giant fist, and a giant flying bad moon spell would all be awesome...

I expect that we will see endless spells for every new battletome release unless they turn out to be poor sellers.

So... I just noticed that Europeans can no longer buy the allied boxed, like the Venom Clan. Why? :s

It's not just Europe. The allied boxes seem to be OOP.   you can still find some on GW site, and some 3rd party retailers, but they are drying up quick (especially the good ones).

If you can find a Venom clan for anywhere near MSRP, would be a good pick up, I wouldn't expect any similar deal for Spiderfang anytime soon.

I have a question about netters.
3 in 20 can be netters. Ok.
The warscroll makes it sound like netters have no other equipment. No weapons, no shields. Is that correct?

Any models can be Musicians and Standard bearers Those models have their weapons in addition to the gongs/standards.  Can I say "this standard bearer's weapon is a net" (if netters can't attack, then he can't attack) or would you say those models must have the regular weapons for the unit?

I know 3 nets come in a box of 20, so buying new kits is no problem, but I have a lot of second hand grots and not a lot of nets (I believe i have 8 nets and 140 grots). So if my command grots can count, that will help.  It's very hard to find individual netters  or net bits.  On the other hand, if they don't have weapons at all, maybe i don't want my archers to have nets at all...

I've got a load of moonclan grots (boredom purchase, loving painting them slowly though). With shamans getting a bonus to casting, they seem like ideal candidates for endless spells.

You can cast umbral spellportal on a 3+, setting it up 12" away, then the second one 18" away from that, 30" away from the shaman that cast it. Second shaman casts purple sun on a 6, it moves 9" towards the spellportal, ending around 3" away from it, before being teleported through and ending up 6" from the second one. You've just catapulted the sun 36" from where it was cast, outside of dispel range and your shamen are both safe from it bouncing back through the portal.

I've got the army, I'll get the magic set too so this could be a good laugh. The rest of the force is weak and this is the sort of silliness I think works with moon clan.

The nets are their weapons. The main reason for taking them is the -1 to hit in close combat. You would not get shots from the bows since the nets are considered weapons. Not like standard bearers or musicians they are considered to be armed the same as the rest of the unit.

You still get the bonus for shields as long as the unit still meets the 10 model minimum (wording implies that netters still count for this).

So, the official base size for a Moonclan Warboss is 25mm. Seems reasonable.

Aaaaaaaannnnnnnd now I need to figure out how the hell to fit a Giant Squig onto that as well!

Any suggestions, oh wise internet?

How about using a bigger base? I mean. Old Skarsnik has a 40x60 Square Base in his Description.

I thought about that, but it depends on how strict tournament organisers are going to be...
