flemingmma
There is no doubt that we have chosen a hobby that is more expensive than most drugs, but should this stop us playing the game? I say NAY! Don't have the money to buy that hero you have your eye on? Want to create a hero that looks unique? Have a fairly large bits box/ have a friend that does? Well this is the thread for you! In this forum thread i'll be posting cheap (relatively this is warhammer after all) ways that I've discovered to create hero's that will either result in you owning more models than you would if you just bought the hero but for the same money, or having said hero but spending less (and hopefully ending up with more models) Also the reason I've made this a forum thread rather than a blog is because i want other people to post their ideas so i can steal them. flemingmma
For our first 3 heroes your best bet is to pick up the storm of sigmar box, this gives you 3 easy to build liberators, 2 retributors, 5 blood reavers and 3 blood warriors. Also it comes with some good little scenarios to play through and is a good starting point to the hobby of AOS and is significantly cheaper than buying the easy to build kits individually. Of course if you only want the one hero there's no point doing this so hey, do what you want. First hero the Knight Questor Actual price $40 Aud Our price $28 dollars + bits cost bonus models 2 liberators The knight questor is the cheapest of the stormcast heroes but you can make him cheaper What you need is 1 easy to build liberators set 1 left handed power sword (preferably a terminator sized or chaos space marine sword, these are bigger and look cool, I myself used one from the dark angels veterans kit) 1 head swap (optional) Instructions -Stick the power sword where the shield would normally go on the liberator prime (the left arm) -Cut off the hammer on the right hand -File out the arm that is attached to the shield -Stick the shield on the now hammer-less right arm Congrats you now have a knight questor Official model Our model I swapped out the head for a space wolf head and added a little heraldic shoulder shield from the dark angels veterans pack, but the dude looks pretty good and has a nice dynamic pose and looks not too shabby, you can leave the original liberator prime head as its quite similar to that of the knight questor and a bit of a ****** to get out. Tell me what you think of my ideas. Are they ******? should i just get more money? and please post your own bootleg heroes
Swooper
Hah, love the idea of this thread. I've made one hero that fits the theme myself, even if the idea wasn't specifically to save money. Great Bray Shaman Actual price: £9 My price: £6 + bits you probably have lying around anyway What we need: 1 Grot shaman 1 ungor head 1 any kind of skull, preferably horned (optional) - I used one from the gor kit. 1 32mm round base Instructions: - Carefully cut the head from the grot shaman's arm+head bit before assembly, making sure you don't damage the arm. - Assemble grot shaman without the head. - File down the back of the ungor head to fit. A small amount of green stuff may be needed to hide the join. - Optionally, cut the top off the grot shaman's staff and put the skull there instead. - Also optionally, cut off the sides of the grot shaman's square sculpted base, glue to a round 32mm instead. Hide join with texture paint, sand or other basing materials. Results: Obviously doesn't look all that close to the official model, but I don't think anybody's going to argue! Aegisgrimm
Savage Orc Shaman A super dead simple conversion, I made this from a Savage Orc w/Standard that I bought for about $5 USD from my favorite bitz seller, too. I literally just cut off the standard above the uppermost skull, and carved facets with a hobby knife to match the rest of the stone texture. And I figured what better way to make a Shaman special than to make him an albino??

flemingmma
Next hero is the Lord Relictor Official cost $55 Aud Our cost $28 plus bits with 1 bonus model (who we can turn into a hero as well ) What you need 1 retributor prime from the easy to build retributors kit 1 spare stormcast hammer a space marine or other head (if you've got one with a skeleton mask even better) some skeleton bits and skulls (I used the nurgle banner from a chaos space marine kit which has some good bits) some spikes a relic or something to put on his back (i used a book from the vehicle accessories kit) some thin plastic (possibly page dividers or thins plasticard) How to build - Detach the right hand from the retirubtors hammer and stick the spare hammer to said right hand - remove the head from the retributors lightning hammer and stick the reliquary that would normally go on its back to where the head would go - Attach some skeleton bits to the reliquary - swap the head over - cut thin strips (2mm wide 1.5 cm long) of the plastic and twist it round a toothpick and then paint it with super glue so it stiffens in its new position. stick these on like a cape and then attatch the back accessory over the attachment point - stick some spikes on the shoulders
flemingmma
Our third stormcast hero is the knight vexilor and is a fairly easy conversion Official Cost $55 Our cost $28 plus bits 1 extra model (who we've already turned into a hero) What we need 1 retributor from the easy to buil set (not the prime we've already done stuff with him) 1 banner or standard that looks appropriately storcasty (I used the banner from the eternal guard set) 1 liberator head or liberator prime head some spikes What to do -Cut the head of the retributor off and remove the head of his hammer -stick the head of the hammer on top of the banner/standard -Stick the liberator head on -stick the spikes on the hammer -Stick the banner onto where the head of the hammer would normally go (you'll probably need to reinforce the join I certainly did) Huzzah Knight Vexillor
flemingmma
Our next hero is the wight king/ wight king with black axe Official cost 22/28 Our cost 28 + bits Bonus models 2 What you need 1 easy to build blood warrior set 1 shield 1 skeleton head that's appropriately kingy 1 power sword (optional) Instructions -Remove the blood warrior head -remove the gore fist -if you want to make a wight king with tomb blade remove the axe -file off all the khorne regalia and add some weathering, drill some small holes add some scratches Stick the skeleton head on Result This one may not seem as good value as the other heroes but considering you can make both from the one set of blood warriors plus i reckon the other blood warrior could make a good chaos lord or lord of plagues/ blights the blood warriors are a good set even more so if you get them in the storm of sigmar box

AGPO
Not the cheapest kit to start with, but I got an extra Lord of Plagues and Rotbringers Sorcerer out of the Glottkin box just by magnetising the two smaller brothers. Total cost: 6 rare earth magnets, two spare bases and a couple of bits of cork. All told under 1€ Just posted pics in my blog (linked in my sig.)
