Next months hobby challenge is to write 500 words of background for you're army, I feel @Stevewren May have had a hand in this one ?

Its a great place to justify why you are a picker not a roller when it comes to Command Traits and Artifacts. Post your tales up here what you are finished.

This one had nothing to do with me @Ben Johnson! I'd have liked a conversion challenge, or maybe 'design a Warscroll' competition.

The next chapter of the Knoights of Azyr is all done, one point to me.

And so once again it fell to Lord-Celestant Matthias Hammerstrike of the Knights Azyr, one of the first founding Stormhosts first cast into the mortal realms at the beginning of the Age of Sigmar. The responsibilities of leadership were great on Matthias, greater that even he could have imagined. He knew it would be difficult and that many a soul would need to be reforged once it was over. But the Warlords had to be overcome, Sigmar had asked for it to be so.

This was not Matthias first charge into the Mortal Realms, and by now he was a veteran of many a campaign. It was the Knights of Azyr that kept the Celestial Compass from the hands of the Three Eyed King deep in the heart of Gyran, and who had fought alongside the Hammers of Sigmar to drive back Khul and secure the Brimstone Pernintula.

With him strode the hulking frame of Lord-Castellant Roth Lightbourne, a huge man, even for a Stormcast Eternal. Long ago Roth had been the beloved leader of his people until the coming of Chaos, he saved as many as he could but he was just a man. Until Sigmar intervened saving Rathe and guiding him on a new path. Many a time Roth had been sound counsel to Matthias offering sage advice or a strong blade when necessary.

Alongside the Chamber Command fought the Hevavanhost Extremis Chamber with units from both the Lightning and Thunderwave Echelon amongst the ranks. Long range support came in the form of units from Justicar Conclave the Heavenbolt Congress, the air will be filled with the light from hundreds of celestial arrows.

Onwards the Knights of Azry pushed not knowing who their first foe would be...

It was the crazed followers of GorkaMorka that first they faced, the unorganised rabble threw themselves forward into range of the Heavenbolt Congress, one unit at a time they were destroyed but still that came. Chained Mangler Squigs came bounding forward with no thought other that destruction in there mind, awful creatures made worse for the Moonclan fungus brew that are forced to consume, each sip sending them more and more wild and crazy.

They were no match for the Sigmerite plate worn by the Thunderwave Echelon, with barely a scratch they emerged, all that remained of the Squigs were discarded chains and a foul smell in the air. Before the Knights of Azyr could savour the victory a dark cloud was visible of the horizon.

The air grew hot as the Legion approached, a tingle of magic could also be felt seeping through the very ground that the twisted enemy approached on. As the Stormhost formed a battle line, harsh metal creations could be seen approaching, barely containing the daemons bound within.

Then without warning the very ground in front of Matthias erupted with a Bailwind Vortex shimmering with magical energy. Landing atop of the vortex came the leathery wings of Drazaroth the Ashen, his entire bode aflame with a fire that seemed to have a mind of its own.

The Stormcast fought bravely but the fire and the magic were too much even for them, many a soul would hear the ringing of the Anvil of Apotheosis that night.

One defeat cannot stop the army of order not with right on its side and Sigmerite armour on its back.

Many stories are told of the origins of Anastasia, some say she used to be a beautiful Queen who sought the Blood Kiss so as to never age, some that she was the favored general of Neferata herself turned to serve eternally, still more that she was a thief who stole the secret from Nagash himself!

Anastasia keeps quiet on the matter herself for it suits her purpose that none know the truth - she was just a common soldier, given the kiss along with dozens of others in order to put up more resistance against the Chaos invasion in order to buy her Sire time to escape.

However, she has always been a survivor and managed to escape just barely with her life.  Over the following centuries she did her best to try to learn to control her new powers, but without a teacher she has still has an imperfect mastery of some.  This is most apparent in her inability to grant the Blood Kiss to males without them rapidly degenerating into beastial Varghiests.  For this reason all of her close advisors and lieutenants are female.

In recent years Anastasia has made her home in the ruins of an old Chaos fortress that fell to infighting centuries ago.  Such was the fel magics used when it fell that surrounding area has turned into a fetid diseased swamp, shrouded in such deep mist that it never gets brighter than a haunting twilight.

Her closest advisor, and leader of the Maidens of Fens (a group of fearsome Blood Knights) is the Lady Mariska.  She has been seen at Anastasia’s side only recently but seems to have already earned the trust of farour of the Anastasia.

Keeper of her menagerie and chief court wizard is Zoltan, the Withered.  He is responsible for ensure that both Darda’il (her Zombie Dragon) and Terrorgheist are kept in top fighting condition.

In order to survive Anastasia has learnt not to be picky about what forces she will work with - after all is it worth risking eternal life for the sake of appearances?  This means that there have been reports of her working with many many groups in order to further her aims, most recently a force of Stormcast Eternals seeking to destroy a nearby band of Nurgle demons.

In the last couple of months Anastasia has heard the summons of the Lord of the realm of Death, Nagash himself who is rallying his armies after his rebirth.  She is determined that she will not just be a pawn in his schemes though and has (perhaps foolishly) sought the aid of Neferata in order to not be ignored as insignificant.  To that end she is trying to increase her personal army and influence.

Her current plans are focused on gaining the loyalty of local Ghoul King, Janós the Golden, reputed to have so much wealth he dips his claws in gold before each battle.  If she can gain his followers then she will be strong enough to be able to expand and teach all to fear the name of Anastasia the Scourge of the Twilight Fens!

A point to me as well :)

Only made a start on mine but halfway there...not going to be winning any literary prizes for this piece though...although the game last night gave me the inspiration to make it to 500 words!

The writings of scholars once told of a foul daemon lord, Uraka, who led armies through the realms in search of constant battle, an excerpt of this history was recently discovered in a daemon worshiper’s coven destroyed by the Sigmarites.

Uraka led his mighty Khornate legion through the realms seeking to find battle where none could be found.  His feats of prowess mounted on his deamonic fell wrought steed Krage were renowned and the skulls of his foes lay trodden into the ground.

The victories over the Nurgle foes saw Uraka defeat the plague lord Sllarr and with defeat came victory as his deity bestowed the greater daemon of Khorne, Scarbrand to do his bidding in his everlasting battle for atonement.

The gathering of the daemonic host had attracted the most battle crazed mortal warriors and bands of chain hammer wielding whirlwinds of destruction and the heavily armoured warriors on foot were led by twin Slaughterpriests Hrak and Eodk with whom each had been granted the boon of a pair of Khogoraths to further increase the slaughter that could be reaped in the name of Khorne.

An excerpt from the battle of the Heavens

…with a bestial roar the Khornate armies of Uraka faced off against the hoard of Nugle deamons led by the Glotkin, the realm gates flickered with their unstable magiks and lightning coursed across the unnatural skies.  Uncaring for their safey the wrathmongers plunged through the warpgate to confront the main battle line of the hated Nurgle host appearing in the midst of the wretched Nurglings.

Scarbrand led the charge across the battlefield bellowing a roar at the rotting fly corpses and deamonic riders, but with a sweep of Carnage and Slaughter the deamons were banished from the realm.  The glotkin turned to face this roaring beast and spewed its hateful magic over the Greater Deamon, but the wards on Scarbrands skin glowed bright red and orange and the festering breath washed over to no avail.

Emboldened by the charge the warriors of chaos and bloodletters charged into the fray engaging the plaguebearers supported by the roaring Khorgoraths, goaded on by Hrak.

In the midst of the battle two meteors struck the earth scattering the armies, and Eodk investigated this skull shaped rock as plumes of blood gushed into the air.

In a bid to stop the onrushing greater deamon the glotkin charged breathing magiks and breath over the deamon, with a bellowing roar of defiance Scarbrand was banished, but the glotkin was surrounded by the frenzied bloodletters and warriors and was soon struck down by the rain of blows sloughing the flesh from the great beast.

As the final remnants of the Nurgle hoard started to dissipate following the death of their general Uraka raised his head to the sky bellowing a challenge to all to come and face his mighty hoard, knowing that more skulls could be won for his master in the campaign to come.
