I'm in the process of converting and painting my models, but here's the terrain we're using for the time being. It's the old Mage Knight Dungeons artifact sets. Durable, prepainted plastic that can be tossed in the box with no fuss on chipping or breaking. Bits can be arranged all sorts of ways on the boards.

Sacrifice to Nagash  at the Kataphrane altar!

Brawl in the Mead hall!

Discover...The Pools of Radiance!

Easy to pack away and store!

I agree on helmets looking awesome and wrote a little about their inspiration here: https://wyrdstonesandtacklezones.com/2017/11/13/warhammer-shadespire-converting-the-warbands/

Hey, hex-based maps.  I just had an idea!  Let's see if it works out...

They are 52mm flat-to-flat.

52mm, eh?  So some quick conversion work tells me that makes them 2.04 inches flat-to-flat then.  In that case, let me check Hirst Arts molds, I know they have hex-tiles available...

Aha!  Hirst Arts does have 2 inch flat-to-flat hex tiles!

So anyone who is into casting their own stuff, here you go!  I still haven't tried it out, but if I make the full plunge into Shadespire, these molds might be cool to get for it.

Or keep it much simpler and order those laser cut Mdf bases. If you really want to offcourse :)

The boards I ordered turned up today...

apologies for the terrible photography but those making their own might find these useful. They also sell a set of impassable hex sized pieces.

I want to teach my young children to play as an activation game, these will save wear and tear on the official boards! Might spray them grey with the terrain.

Has there been a GW statement about converted models in "offical" tournaments?

As cool as it is to see these nifty conversions, I have not modded mine at all out of concern for being dq'd or confusing my opponents.

With the unofficial tournament rules 'leak' it's basically suggested that weapon swaps are okay but conversions have to be made from the original model and the TO has to approve of it. Locally the GW manager was cool with my conversions and frankly think a lot of it goes as long as you indeed see the original models where used and characters are clearly visible representing who they should.  So I'd avoid full race/gender/weapon swapping.

Also see the attachment below.

Thanks for the reply and the doc.

Yeah, I think I'll avoid any sort of converting if I plan to play competitively, which I do.  I mean, just look at Basha.  It might feel cool to arm him with two huge swords, but all that make him different from Cutta, really, is the clubs vs swords.  No matter how cool, it's just confusing.  Those poor Bloodbuddies are especially hard.  And the Skeletons? Not a ton of difference between Petitioners and the Champion and the Prince.

So -

If your competitive foes are used to the quick visual reference of the game pieces (remember, in no way at all has GW marketing this as a hobby game) and you interfere with that recognition, even a little, it can be an unwarranted advantage.  In a tight game, that may give the converter a win he or she should not have.
