Engineers

Question

I play with some friends every week in some friendly games. I wanted to know what happens if an engineer takes over a war machine if it lost its crew. In our last game his engineer "grim berlixun" (not sure on spelling the dwarf engineer) took over a cannon, a organ gun and was still able to use his weapons.

 

What is the actual rule of engineers? Because 1 guy firing 2 war machines plus his own weapons was ridiculous.

You got taken for a ride. He can repair warmachines, he can't crew them.

Just to be absolutely clear, warmachines get bonus abilities if an engineer is nearby. But the engineer doesn't count as crew and cannot fire the weapon.

Unless it specifically states in the Engineer rules that they can crew a war machine, they can't. So in this case Grimm Burloksson (old character from the old AOS Dwarf Rules - https://www.games-workshop.com/resources/PDF/AoS_Compendiums/warhammer-aos-dwarfs-en.pdf) has the following rule:

Master Engineer: In your hero phase, Grimm Burloksson can repair a single War Machine within 4". That model repairs D3 wounds.

 

The War Machine rules in AOS aren't very straight forwards and have seemed to caused a bit of confusion which is why we may see them disappear in time (especially as there are only a few models with the rule now). But basically the War Machine and it's Crew are classed as one unit, where the War Machine needs it's crew to be able to shoot.
