Are abilities which can take a unit out of combat treated as retreats?

Ian R

Question

For example if a Knight Vexillor or Lord Relictor uses their Penant or Lightening Chariot ability to move a friendly unit engaged in combat out of the combat, are they treated as having retreated so they cannot then declare a charge or shoot in that turn?  I think there is a faq but I cannot find it.

Its been discussed a few time in various sub subjects (Kharadron grapnels for example) and answer usually end to yes, its a retreat, but it depends.

The rule is under the movement phase section but is worded such that it talks about a move that takes them out of 3", and we know there are many types of move (not just in the movement phase).  So if your ability does not mention 'move' then it would not be a retreat, otherwise, it is.

It depends on whether the rule is a setup or not.

If it's a setup, then it's not a retreat - page  7 of the FAQ.

So Vanguard Wing and Changehost are not retreats.

Destruction move would be a retreat (thankfully).

Lightning Chariot and Vexillor would not be retreats.

Astral Compass is arguably a setup and a move too, so would be a retreat in most players' eyes.

Rampaging/Mighty Destroyers would only allow a pile in move if you are within 3" of the enemy anyway, so not a concern.

Ironfist movement could be used to get out of combat if you rolled high enough, however this would definitely be a retreat.

Good point Chris. Yes in ancient times there were these things called Stonehorns with Battle Brew and they deleted all and their pew pew healed them and they never died. In those days, the one saving grace was they could not use old Rampaging Destroyers to back up the truck and charge again.

We discussed that when we talked about the new Seraphon allegiance ability because obviously teleporting Saurus Knights out of combat and letting them charge back in sounds like a very cool thing to do.
IIRC the conclusion was that it will be allowed since teleporting means setting them up so you actually don't "move" out of combat.
