On square and round bases.

Question

Hey guys,

So one of the big things that I found daunting in returning to the hobby is figuring out if I need to re-base my models from square to round bases. From what I've seen, it seems like a formality, but I wanted to check with the consensus about it. Are squares acceptable for the old models, even in competitive play?

By competitive I assume you mean for formal tournaments. I know SCGT stated round bases only. It all depends what tournament it is. I expect official GW ones don't care (due to the official measuring from the model itself ruling...) but I do expect everyone else will want/make rounds bases mandatory. Especially as all reboxes/new kits are on round bases.

Friendly games, I don't care.

If you wanted to play at events, most tournaments just ask that you blu-tac your square based models onto rounds for the sake of fairness. If you consider that a unit of 20mm sq models could rank up a lot closer and more compact, thus getting more attacks in than an equivalent unit on 25mm rounds - you can see why tournaments like to have equality of basing.

As Shane says, in friendly games that advantage isn't going to win you events, you just need to be aware of it.

That said, the armies look fantastic on round bases and it gives you a great opportunity to do some more impressive scenic bases. I know @Mengel Miniatures did a tutorial on how to rebase squares to rounds when he did his Tomb Kings, so check out his blog: http://www.mengelminiatures.com/2015/07/tutorial-rebasing-your-fantasy-models.html
