SC or Sylvaneth, if you had to choose.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone! Considering starting a new force. I dont want to rush into anything and want to be well informed. Ive been trying to read as much as i can about stormcast and sylvaneth, but i also want peoples opinions. In terms of looks, i cant decide but realize that that is a subjective matter and im on my own. I love the look of both sylvaneth and SC which makes it so hard to choose.

Players of SC and sylvaneth, what has been your experience with the faction in the current meta? Are you satisfied? Are you disheartened and would you recommend against it? If you had to start over, would you choose something else or rebuild SC/sylvaneth?

Currently i have a pretty huge skaven force, and im pretty disheartened with them myself. I feel i did rush into the force, and if i could go back in time, i definitely wouldn't do them again. Every piece i buy its an attempt to salvage something that is, in my opinion, inherently bad. Sort of like turkey! We stuff it and do all this stuff to try and make it better, but in the end... its just a dry bird. Anyway, this is the kind of thing i want to avoid when choosing my second force, hence this post.

So what is your recommendation? For or against either faction?

Some second choices of mine are FEC and ironjawz, but im def leaning towards sylvaneth/SC.

I look forward to your comments and opinions! Thanks in advance!

Hi there, if you're looking to play competitively a lot, e.g., looking to attend multiple tournaments, Stormcast are one of the best bets all around. They have about every tool at their disposal, multiple competitive builds, multiple playstyles, the largest model range w/ guaranteed annual expansion, great for painting and customizing to your liking, etc.

Well I have played Sylvaneth since getting back into Warhammer a year ago. I love them and have  a 50/50 success rate.

I have friends who play Stormcast and they love them, but what other people say may not work for you. Whats your gut feeling? if that fails then you need………….

THE RULE OF COOL (may not work for everyone but its my go to rule)

Look at the figures for each possible faction and when 1 figure leaps at you and screams I AM COOL YOU MUST PAINT ME more than any other thats the army. Job done.

When I started my friends were already playing and I had watched a game or two and thought yeah I haven't played for  a long time (had Skaven and Dark Elf armies many moons ago) , and decided to restart.  I went onto GW site and looked at figures. After 20 minutes I saw Kurnoth Hunters and thought SOLD. I knew nothing about them, skills, traits etc just decided by the figures. And now I love playing them.

I have just recently done the same again. Had a look and decided I loved the look of Putrid Blightkings, so I have now started a Nurgle army. Even my daughter is getting in on the act and recently decided she wanted a small army. I asked which one, she said "They look ace I want them (pointing at a big spider), so I get to build a small Spiderfang Grot army too.

To be fair I don't think there is a right or wrong answer for this. You will have fun whatever

I would go for the SCE. They have so many strong units and Battalions its insane. Normally Movement should have been a weakness of thes Warriors with high survivability, but all that teleport abilities make them super fast. Sylvaneth can have a 2+ reroll save? SCE have that too. I dont play them, but I see them as the toughest oponent in the game.

I'm playing Sylvaneth since one year. I agree with Simon, the first thing you need to ask your self is wich army looks better for me? I started when my friends bought me some seraphon, but then i saw the sylvaneth and i said "thats my army". I love the lore, the models and evrything. I do not really like SCE, all their models looks pretty the same, just big man with the same armour and different weapons, but that's personal.

Both army are competitive, with sylvaneth i just reached 2nd place in a tournament winning 2 game on 3 (lost the final vs tzeench, an hard matchup, and dice really betrayed me).

It's up to you to decide, they are both strong and competitive, with 2 different strategies, just ask your self "wich one i want to paint more?"

Go Stormcast, not because they are stronger or else, but only because they are more various than Sylvaneth.

I'm a Sylvaneth player, and even if I love them I must admit that their playstile is not so various. They have few units, and not so different playstiles.
Oh, and they need 4-6 Wyldwoods which aren't cheap...

Stormcast have way more choice, way more different playstyles in my opinion. You should be able to build up a Sylvaneth Army just to thinking to pick up another one after 6 months/1 Year of games.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! Was great to hear peoples opinions.

In regaurds to "rule of cool" and going with what i think looks best, thats badically how i narrowed it down to sylvaneth and sce, and now im having trouble choosing beteeen the two because i think they both look equally wonderful!

Many of you have made a good point and its one that i did realize, the variety in SCE is vast. I do like how well supoorted and broad they are, and they do have units to fulfill every role. In terms of variety, i know sylvaneth is lacking but id love an army with a ton of kurnoth hunters, just looks awesome. So although not various, and even if they were various i think id still max our hunters and maybe run TLA and drycha, both incredibly good looking and potent heros. On that same point, i think one of the best looking models is the stardrake. Retributors also look amazing.

Since these two armies look pretty much equally as amazing, it comes down to performance. Although im not trying to be uber competitive, i still want to put up a good fight, and i do like winning. Im also burnt out from painting hordes, so these two armies allow more elite models with lower model counts to paint, which is a plus.

On a side note, i think in terms of rule of cool, FEC and ironkawz also look just as good, but their power level is a bit lacking which is why i put them on the back burner opting for SCE or sylvaneth. I mean, why not get an army that looks just as good but performs better? Again, im not doing it for comoetitiveness, but if they both look equally amazing, why not look to power level next? I was just wondering if there is anything im missing about these armies that is a reason not to get one? E.g. boring to play, challenging weaknesses that are annoying to overcome etc.

Anyway sorry for the late response, had exams so been quite busy.

Thanks again!

Well, is not true that Sylvaneth are not various, maybe they are not as much various as SCE, but they are still various. You can choose different approach to the game, with the Gnarloot battalion for exemple you can play more oriented on magic and shooting, while with the dreadwood one you can go for an hard hitting/alpha strike list, and both this battalions are really competitive . You can play with horde (a lot of dryads are stronger than what people think) or play elite, as you said with kurnoth (maybe some with bow and some with schyte, i do 6 and 6 for exemple) or with big treeman, in my list i play one spirit of durthu, one treelord ancient and one treelord, and i can tell you is really funny to see that giants tree on the board, and they also scare enemy that focus them most of the time letting kurnoth hunter have fun.

Also remember that you can play both the army with ally and some particular battalions (like guardian of alarielle) that allow you to introduce SCE unit like judicator liberator and lost castellant in a Sylvaneth army.

It's up to you to decide, do it with your heart, seems stupid but it works!

P.s.

With the right item your treelord ancient general have a +2 save, rerolling 1s and ignoring rend of -1, add regrowth spell and you have something almost impossible to kill, he survived in evry game i played, my friends hate me for this.

The clearest distinction between the armies IMO is Stormcast are more forgiving to play, they have resilient troops with multiple wounds and decent armor saves. They also hit reasonably hard, are relatively fast and do not take large amount of models to build an effective force.

Sylvaneth take a bit more finesse, and have a play style unlike any of the other armies. They are an army of specialists with very specific strengths. Use a unit in the wrong place, or at the wrong time and you'll get wiped off the board. Use the right unit in the right place at the right time and you can win match-ups that you shouldn't be winning.

Anyway, nothing stop you to collect both. They are allies, work fine together, and Sylvaneth have 1 mixed Battallion with SCE.

So anyone you'll choose, doesn't overwrite the other one.
