Free Cities Generator - Bring your cities

Recommended Posts

So they just released a free city generator on the community page. I always love tools like this to drive inspiration and its always fun to see what people can come up with from a few randomized tables so come post what you've generated. I'll start with my first, the town of Mistforge

Mystforge, The Leviathan's Rest
The town of Mystforge is built in the bones of a massive leviathan that was brought down by the combined efforts of twelve companies of scourge corsairs. They maintain the seaport and live in an uneasy alliance the town's human residents and the detachment of Stormcast Eternals who control the arcane forge for which the town was named, an ancient relic found within the leviathan's gut that crystalises the mists of ulgu allowing them to be forged into blades of pure shadow.

City generator is found here: https://www.warhammer-community.com/2017/09/26/make-your-own-free-city-the-easy-way-sep26gw-homepage-post-4/

Sooo

The name of the city is Regal Tower a twin city based in shyish and Chamon, It's a sprawling Metropolis. It's inhabited by Aelves, humans, Stormcast Eternals and Seraphon.

It's a legendary location, it was a site of a great battle (looking who lives there not a surprise) and the people are master craftsmen. Of course the city has an underground darkling covens cult and it also has a scourge privateer sea port. The city also has an arcane forge and a great armoury.

Pretty neat.

Decided to do a small backstory.

The city was created over the site of a great battle against chaos in control for a realm gate that connected shyish and Chamon, the people decided to create many huge towers to house various races even the Slaan having built a tower for the seraphon for unknown reasons. Due to their aid in the battle none questioned it but strange aelf sorceress also aided in that battle instead of creating a tower they went underground there are whispers of aelves and humans vanishing in the night. The scourge privateers and their fleets prowl the waters crushing the chaos navy that came to attack from sea earning a place in the city. Due to being great craftsmen the Aelves and humans along with the help of the slaan and the stormcast eternals crafted the towers to ward away the dead of shyish. Perhaps this place might be used as a launching point into Shyish and Chamon? Only the gods know.

Lion Fastness

A large city located near a Realmgate between Realms of Ghur and Hysh allowing the city to benefit from either places - wild and savage human tribes provide food, animal skins and such goods while enjoying the superior blacksmith wares from the elves populating the city part in Hysh. In time of need elven regiments move out alongside the human warbands and warriors of the Lions of Sigmar stormhost which watches over the newfound city atop their alabaster towers in Hysh part and gigantic tree watchtowers in the Ghur part, while also guarding a some sealed and terrible vault which is to be studied by the Lord-Relictors of the host. Because of the elven population there are several mages of the Eldritch Council that build their towers around a legendary library of uncontested potential and knowledge in order to uncover its secrets and wisdom. As the city's notorious thieves guild is well known for causing trouble and stealing arcane knowledge, the loremasters of the Council stay ever watchful lest these books fall into the wrong hands.

Farport

The great city of Farport is the last (or first) port of call for traders who make a living trading across the sea of smoke in the ream of Aqshy. This bustling city port is a melting pot of humans, aelves and duardin.

The mysterious ruins of Farport castle have stood guard over the harbour for centuries. Once it was mighty fortress made by an unknown race who have long since abandoned it for reasons unknown, it is now the first sight traders will have of Farport.

While many traders stop for supplies many also come to trade with the local master craft workers. The metal work and armour made by the local duardin are much desired and the fabrics from the weavers adorn many nobles across the lands.

The wealth of Farport has been a source of envy and a corsairs have established hidden ports from which their swift silent ships strike deadly raids on the trading galleys. The streets of Farport can be no less deadly as the local thieves guild prey on the unwary. As such a chapter of stormcast watch over the city, rooting out the pirates and thieves, but theirs is an unending task.

the trope god was watching when I rolled those dice.

The village of Shadehallow, in the Realm of Death is inhabited by Humans, Aelves and Sylvaneth. It has grown around the massive mausoleum of Haroth, and the numerous observatories and orreries that surround it.

The map generator really needs a "surrounded by forests" option so I photoshopped some myself, but this is zoggin ace!

Shadehallow is now officially part of my homebrew Realm of Death region: The Harrowmark.

So this is for my Free People army! Which I have been wanting an excuse to rebase for a while.

Dragonbane: The Flying City

A city built upon the back of a huge flying leviathan, it is free to traverse the realms as it sees fit. A city of notorious levels, known for its sinister reputation. It is inhabited by Humans, Stormcast and Aelves and Duardin. The monster never lands except for every 100 years to drink from the Sorrow sea. To find the city is as hard as it is to find a god itself. The inhabitants are a hardy buch who mostly worship The Great Drake, many mausoleums are set up in the town to further their dedication to him. The Stormkeep is a house of Astral Templars who themselves use the city to have a better view upon the Realms and can be dispatched when needed. The Aelves are mostly Nomadic Wanderers, they live within the scale forests surrounding the city and use the Dragon to traverse the regions easier. Barak Ziflin have established a Skyport here too.

Wow, I pretty much rolled up the perfect city for my planned Seraphon army on the first try! Only had to shift the first half of the name one step down and add some humans to complete it. Definitely keeping this one :D

Sun Fang

The city of Sun Fang is located in the harsh, steamy jungles of Hysh. Although the light of the realm is in many places considered a blessing, the Humans of Sun Fang consider it more of a curse as they toil in the fields surrounding the city. So scorching is the sun's rays that even the hardy Duardin and aloof Aelves prefer to stay inside during the day. In the night, the marketplaces bustle with activity as the farmers trade their produce for the tools made by Duardin craftsmen and the fineries designed by the Aelves. This is all overseen by the mysterious servants of Loqtza, the Slann Starmaster overseeing the city's activities from the Blood Pyramid. Loqtza is rumored to have been appointed by Lord Kroak himself to safeguard the ancient secret in the heart of the Blood Pyramid. As to the nature of this secret, noone knows.

Lately, a strange illness has started affecting the Humans and Duardin of Sun Fang. The Aelven healers dismiss it as a new strain of the common jungle fever, which has caused resentment to grow between the inhabitants of the city. According to rumor, the illness has an altogether more sinister origin. Tight order is kept, however, by the Order Serpentis garrison. The Order Serpentis has for a long time had a large contingent set up in Sun Fang due to the abundance of reptilian beasts inhabiting the surrounding lands. The crime rate in the city is kept low by the rumored brutality of Uaxgar, the overlord of the Saurian overseers of the city, and the cruelty of Uruloki, the Order Serpentis Dreadlord. Heavy-handed as they may be, Uaxgar and Uruloki are held in high esteem by the Sun Fang populace due to keeping the constant Orruk raids in check.

I feel this description may have been how the town was before my Clan Pestilens arrived and set up home...

Mist Opolis is a Town atop a vast floating island of trees floating across the seas of Hysh. It is home to Humans and Sylvaneth, the Humans work to Harvest the seas Glimmerfish and keep the towns agriculture and economy running while the Sylvaneth maintain the footings of the towns buildings and keep the island afloat. Shifting roots keep the buildings in place on the ever listing surface of the floating island. These same roots are used to propel and steer the island between the ports it visits throughout the realm of Hysh.

And another

The Stonefort

The Plains of Mourne are an arcane place deep in Nagash's realm of Syhish. For some reason magic seems to be stronger here, perhaps the space between reality and unreality is thinner. Regardless deluded generals, adventurers, sell swords, mages and the like have fought to control the plain with pointless battles fought again and again. The bodies of the dead have fertilised the ground and the surrounding petrified Syvlvaneth woods are like skeletal fingers ready to grasp the unprepared.

The lgeiond of the dead now stalk the plain, hunting for recruits to join their growing, doomed ranks. Those who scratch a living around the Plains are ever watchful and are skilled hunters of the undead.

To protect their cities the races have created a surrounding ring of steel, of which the Stonefort is but one part. However, it is the Stonefort that houses the Seat of the Order Templaris, a famed Freeguild of undead hunters whose duty is to cleanse the Plains. Members of the order are born into the ranks or selected in yearly musterings. The life of  a Templar is hard for they drill daily in the art of war for they know if they fail then the flame of life will be extinguished forever in this part of the realm.

In the mortal tongue this place is called Skypillar, its aelvish name is all but unpronounceable by all but the most skilled masters of the language. Skypillar is the imperial capital of a vast aelvish empire, a seat of learning, magic and skilled crafts. Artisans from all races would come here to study, some so moved by the beauty of Skypillar they would break down and weep.

The rulers of Skypillar were drawn from the great noble houses but were elected by the population. They held the power over the city and the empire, and the art of politicking was a great art in deed for it brought power, and power as they say corrupts. Soon the families warred, where there should have been places learning there were forges, mages studied to make deadlier spells. As the families warred so they drained the empire and its coffers. The imperial army collapsed, the orruks came. First as small raids but then in larger and larger numbers. The army gave out and Skypillar was overrun. The nomad princes exiled to the woods with what is left of their houses.

In the mortal tongue this place was called Skypillar but now it is called The Pit.

The village of Glimmersky sits on a hill near the Realmgate between Hysh and Ulgu, and as such tends to be dark near the base of the hill, giving a bright contrast between the lower reaches and the sky. The village is known for it's excellent Arcane Forges, which turn out a large number of armanents for the Stormcast chambers.

The primary inhabitents of the village are Aelves and Duardin who labour together to build the weapons, and the Stormcast who ensure that the village is protected from the frequent ghoul attacks from the nearby Dreaming Tombs.

Glimmer Port

Glimmer Port exists along the shores of the Silver Sea in Chamon. The current city is built on duradin ruins which had become the site of a great forge of Khorne, before a host of Stormcast cleansed the area during the Realmgate. Now. home to Humans who work a new forge, straining metals from the silver sea to work into new weapons for the armies of Sigmar. These civilians frequently experience dreams ghosts from ages past, duradin, demons, and scions of Sigmar.  A massive mausoleum stands in the center of this sprawling metropolis, housing the remains of the durdain that were found and as a temple to the Stormcast that fell during the battle. Though no Stormcast remain in Glimmer Port, a legion of Seraphon guard the city and the armory that is now full of newly forged weapons.

Recently a strange company of Sylvaneth, covered in some sort of bronze bark, made contact with the city. Apparently, they have been in the hills to west for centuries, hiding from chaos. With these newfound allies, the garrison of the city is bolstered and new ore deposits have been tapped in those hills.

I cheated, and rather than rolling dice, just picked options that already fit the city I've imagined.

Seer's Bane

Aqshy (where all my stormcast are from)

Village

City is Underground, "Mysterious" Plague,  Sinister Reputation

In the middle of a Nurgle infected marsh, a single city remains. The endless maze of rotting trees and stagnant water ends abruptly, revealing a giant sinkhole (like the one shown below.) A village inhabited by less than a thousand durdin, the fact that anyone can live in these conditions itself is a miracle. Carved into the walls, the village is a maze of tunnels, with a single entrance, a door made of fire. This city was founded as of the Age of Chaos began, and Sigmar's forces were in full retreat. It was meant as a safe haven, and was soon flooded with refuges, but as the forces of Nurgle drew closer, the durdin closed the gates. An elite force of Irondrakes and Gyrobombers were able to hold off the daemons, and the city held. However, Nurgle's plague quickly infected the citizens, and they realized they were doomed. A force of scientists theorized that if they could collect blood from a Nurgle monstrosity, and were the blood to be injected into the citizens, a minor case of the plague would follow, but the full strength would never take hold. A small party of durdin left, but only a single warrior made it back, clutching the body of one of his infected comrades. The returning dwarf was infected himself, and became the first of the fallen, a group of the cities guard who were lost in combat, and retaining their sanity, returned to the city to make use of their rotting but immortal bodies, and serve as guardians of Seer's Bane for an eternity. The vaccines were successful, and the village remained free. A millennia later, Seer's Bane still scrapes by,  at constant war with the chaos around them, forced to hunt down the monsters around them to continue adapting their antibodies against the ever changing plague. The missions are now more efficient, with fully armored and masked (think black death plague masks like below) durdin flying to the surface in Gyrobombers, hunting their quarry, then returning through the purifying gate of fire. The citizens are not unchanged however, with pale skin and a constant cough. The king has recently heard word of a new force in the region, clad in blue and gold, who battle the chaos. The pilots have been searching for these mysterious warriors, and it only a matter of time before they are found.

This city was actually designed to fit into the Dark Age of Sigmar. I plan to build this army at some point, with crow masks added and black and rusted armor scheme, but it could be a while until I get the Tempests Eye box and some other dwarves.

FARSPIRE - Towering watchpost at the Viridian Coast in Ghyran, Populated by Aleves and Sylvaneth. It's a location of general novelty, once a place of great battle with the forces of Tzeentch. It was saved by sudden  intervention of Stormcast Eternals, who now protect Farspire. Inhabitants are plagued by strange dreams of nightmarish monsters and blue fire - maybe Tzeentch wants another round.

Some great cities here - it's cool to see how a few dice rolls can spark the imagination!

Sigmaropolis

Sigmaropolis was once a place of great faith and piety, a beacon of the God-King's light amidst the shadows of Ulgu. Yet even this illustrious heritage was not enough to save it from the predations of Chaos, and the city was long ago cast into ruin. Today it is nothing more than a village perched between mysterious ruins, a place of broken faith and mournful shadows.

It was the duardin who first resettled Sigmaropolis in the hopes of finding treasure and fortune buried beneath the ruins. Alas, in their greed they meddled with forces they did not understand. Drawn by sibilant whispers in the dark they dug deep beneath the old ruins and struck a channel of energy that once carried the souls of Sigmaropolis directly to Shyish, the realm of death. Dark magicks billowed up to engulf the ruined churches and catacombs. Any duardin they touched was instantly turned to dust. When at last the energy subsided, Sigmaropolis no longer rested wholly within Ulgu, but partly within Shyish as well, its halls fluctuating between the two at random.

Since then, Sigmaropolis has grown darker as the will of Nagash seeks to wipe it from existence, little willing to tolerate veneration of his hated foe Sigmar. The air around the village and ruins constantly shifts and stirs as the cursed place is torn between two realms. Occasionally undead will burst from the ground and seek to slaughter any in their path. And yet the duardin remain, refusing to abandon their search for treasure because of a little magic. They have since been joined by a band of Sylvaneth, who walk the ruins in silence and and work their magic upon the worst of the breaches in the realms, and even some few Seraphon. These lizard folk refuse to set foot in the village or ruins but keep a constant patrol of its outskirts in Ulgu, their only purpose to prevent anything escaping the realm of death...
