Is a mixed chaos army viable nowadays or better stick with faction books?

As the title says, is it viable today? Seems since Disciples of Tzeentch and Blades of Khorne were released nobody plays a mixed list anymore. The next release will be nurgle (blightwar) and they also get new alligence abilties and new stuff, so factions get even more split up.

Sure it's cool to play only one faction and sell your soul to one of the chaos gods, but what's with guys like me, who like all of them (or 4 of the 5, if you count the rat ;) )?

If you have to build an army with the new generals handbook would you play a mixed list or stick to a faction? Do you think mixed chaos armies are dead?

A lot of the Chaos Allegiance stuff got hit pretty badly (as I'm sure the other grand alliances did too) so I am struggling to justify using them myself.

Other more experienced players may have a better understanding of the overall changes though. :)

he's talking about running armies that are allegiance: chaos (ie, mixed chaos).

There's still lots of reasons to do that.

One I've considered a bunch is that it's the only way to include hell cannons, and hell cannons are still very good. There's plenty of other examples of good but tough to fit units (belakor, for example).

If you have an ability that really benefits from +1 to hit (blightkings, skyfires, etc..), chaos allegiance is really potent.

Everyone got hit at the same time, but people tend to only care about their favorites.

I would say GA abilities are still good. I have been running Order for a year and it worked for me. You may have to work a little harder to win against the fancy lists, but it just feels that much better when you do win.

Honestly I feel like the mixed Chaos stuff has hardly changed at all. There's a couple of minor nerfs, but arguably it actually got better overall.

Contrast with Death losing their Rule of the Night…

Crown of Command was the strongest part of the Chaos allegiance benefits, and dropped from automatic on multiple characters to a 5+ roll on one character. That change definitely hurts - the other changes aren't too significant IMO. Death and Destruction both received heavy nerfs.

Thank you all for your answers ;). So it seems that Grand Alliance Chaos is not dead yet =).

Sometimes i had the feeling, that nobody likes mixed Chaos armies anymore, cause all you see here is Disciples, Blades or some skaven or nurgle stuff.  I now they are popular, but i wish we could also have a mixed chaos thread.

Start one dude! I think there'd be more interest than you think.

GA:C won a few big tournaments, at least one beating out DoT in the final round.

This was pre-GHB2017 mind you, and lots of things have changed. BoK, DoT, and Slannesh (most likely Nurgle when they get done), are very flexible, and can pull some really neat tricks. But GA:C still has some amazing flexibility and wide reaching synergies.

So the Chaos Allegiance army trait is completely unchanged in GHB2? (roll a 6, get +1 to hit in combat)

I actually think some of this is because people tend to collect one Chaos God rather than dabble in all of them because there are such a wide range of models available and you get much stronger synergies sticking with a single God.  I'd love to see some units that grant buffs to all Chaos units - but only if you're running GA: Chaos allegiance :)

That would be really cool, if you could buff generic Chaos with some units. Yeah mono god has good synergies, as always, but they lack diversity and some of them have flaws as they are only good in melee, or more durable but less punchy etc.

I think Chaos' saving grace is that the god key words tend to give some nice synergies with stuff outside of your direct faction, so even though some of the Generic Grand Alliance Chaos artifacts and abilities might be weak sauce (disclaimer: from what people are saying here), you can actually make some nice synergies between units that make it worth while still.
