Klerych
Hello! I think it's my first thread and, boy, I already am asking for help! So I've been doodling around with army lists now that I was forced to buy the new Handbook to keep using the App reasonably and I came up with the idea of running a couple troggoths with my Moonclan/Greenskinz/overall green-skinned menace for kicks and giggles. And then I hit the wall on which ones should I get. The biggest appeal for me is the fact that the Fellwater Troggoths are in plastic - there's little I like less than finecast/resin minis. But on the other hand I do own the Skull Pass dawi-hating troll model that serves as Sourbreath Troggoth nowadays (which drops my potential spending down). And the Fellwater Troggoths are sold out on GW store, so my FLGS can't order them for me, which forces me to buy from somewhere else, which makes me sad because I really believe that players should support their local store as much as they can if it's right by them. I also must admit that I hate how the Rockgut Troggoths look - the sculpt is too outdated and goofy for my taste, so I'd rather steer clear from them unless I really have to. What do you think, guys? Which merry bunch should I run? Do you happen to use any of those adorable dumblings in your forces? I don't know if it makes any difference, but here we mostly play 1000-1500 points games with 2000 points roster requirements (so 3+ battlelines and so on), which makes it harder to run 6 troggoths. A thing of note - I own Manglers, an Idol and Gargants, so the question is purely about what Troggoths to run if I really, really want to, not "which behemoth is better instead". Chris Tomlin
Hey @Klerych, Welcome to the forums! My answer here would be very short and simple; Fellwater Troggoths! This is purely down to the models being absolutely brilliant. I've loved them since release and can't believe I've still not bought and painted some to date. Apart from really uppity players, anyone will let you use the plastics as the others to try them out.
Sheriff
I put mine in range of grot nets for extra survivability. I personally love the rockgut ones. 2 units. Each wedged between grot units. 3 grot units side by side.
Crispen
I was going to test something like this: Grot boss on foot Grot boss on foot grot boss on squig Moonclan shaman Moonclan shaman 60 moonclan grots - spears 60 moonclan grots - Bows 20 moonclan grots - spears 3 fellwater troggoths 3 fellwater troggoths TrollHag
Klerych
Thanks for the advice, guys! I love the idea of having some punchy-tanky unit support the grots, and the concept of sticking troggoths behind them, giving them a wee bit more of survivability thanks to the netters, given that I know it's not that hard to hurt troggoths nowadays! 12 hours ago, Crispen said: ... 3 fellwater troggoths 3 fellwater troggoths TrollHag I dig the idea of running the Troll Hag. I was even considering doing it using the Throgg model, given that he's useless now and he would look damn awesome in a Destruction army, pretending to be bringing his Ice Age into the Mortal Realms. Overall I ain't looking to win tournaments with me grots, so I like the idea of playing around with weird-ish lists fielding unusual units! broche
I think the problem with Troggoth (beside that they are a bit overpriced even a 180) is their low bravery. you could use the Bellowing tyrant on them to compensate, or you are stuck using Inspiring presence on them
TheOtherJosh
I'm rather disappointed in the prior recommendations for "Troggoths and how to serve them with Grots." The prior posters are completely missing the point of the title of this thread... I recommend slow braising the troggoth. It solves a substantial issue with toughness. (and the long slow cooking tenderizes them up nicely...) Go for a side of grot sauté. Given their fungal nature, they sauté up nicely I hear. For a beverage I recommend the Bugmans XxxxX. It has an excellent palette cleansing effect as the Grots (and unfortunately troggoth as well) have been known for a rumored mild aftertaste. Donal
Troll hag is amazing, I find her slow for a beatsclaw list but will be decent in a grot one. She'll be fantastic in the duality of death scenario.
Sheriff
Is it possible to have a 'garden rake' formation of grots that hug behind, between, and the front-sides of the unit they are protecting, such as troggoths in this case? In this case the grot netters can snag most enemies in front of the troggoths, even throwing nets from behind the troggoths. Is this feasible? In theory it works great because even if the grots are killed you can just take away non-netters. Or have I misunderstood this?

I like the general concept of this but to maximize the impact of the netters, I think that you want them all in the front rank. This way, their debuff will also impact the second or third rank of most enemies. Also, to take advantage of the 2" range of Troggoths, I would think that a better formation would be 2 ranks of Grots with netters to the front rank, and then the Troggoths, with the rest of the Grots then wrapped around and behind. One issue with that would be that in order to charge you have to be able to get within 1/2" which in this case means they couldn't do it and also have a screen of grots out front. Sheriff
I've considered this since and I'm going to experiment with simply keeping the trolls behind 2-3 rows of grots and puking over them until the grots get thinned down in combat. Probably less irritating for the opponent too, time-wise.
