bsharitt
I've always loved the Nighthaught models but have always been annoyed by the "battleline if" qualifier for such a limited army. Now that I have my hands on the GHB2017, I'm glad to see the allegiance abilities, but disappointed that it has the shorted allies list for death(soulblight and deathlords). All I wanted was the Mortis Engine from the start collecting box as an ally(and maybe some skeletons or zombies as cannon fodder). Yes, I know I can build the Mortis Engine as a Coven throne instead, but the vampires seem to be worst thematic fit for the army of spooky ghosts. Heck, the Mortis Engine even has a tomb banshee as part of the model. I don't care if the Coven Throne might be mechanically better than the Mortis engine, vampire just don't asthetically fit with a spooky ghost army. Ok, rant done. I feel better. Now. Looks like my Moonclan grots and Troggoths work as allies for Ironjaws, looks like I have a plan b.
inunn
To be honest I’m surprised that Nighthaunt don’t get Deathmages as allies, when FEC do. Nighthaunt are a much better thematic fit for necromancers than crypt ghouls are.
Deathrain
I think it's more surprising that the Mortis Engine doesn't have the Nighthaunt keyword to start with. The faction is hardly overflowing with choices and it's included in the Start Collecting box FFS!
BrAiKo
Agree with all of the above. Hopefully the Mortis Engine will see a key word update in the near future.
Sutek
Not being able to include the Mortis Engine is my only disappointment with the new GHB. I'm really looking forward to trying out my Nighthaunt army.
ncshooter426
Best thing to do is continue sending emails/FB posts on the subject. It came up like 5 times on the WarhammerTV event. I've even engaged customer service over the absurdity of a brand new army (via SC) being inherently broken.
Kugane
The mortis engine is literally 75% ghosts. I have no idea how that is NOT considered a Nighthaunt thing, especially after the Nighthaunt start collecting box we used to have.
ncshooter426
There was something about the lore - pecking order of death. Like Nagash was the top guy, vamps were the lieutenants, but the necromancers were like rogue elements. They didn't play nice with the spirit world. In reality - it's lazy writing. They can solve it super easy - either by making Malignant an actual thing, or just disbanding the whole deathmage group (which consists of a whopping 2 models). It's compounded by the fact that the engine comes in the SC box, and outside of that little formation (which has no points... yet another way to fix it) it cannot be used together - outside of generic death. It's stupid, I know. Everyone knows it too - keep hammering at GW to fix it. Not like that change would cripple the balance of power in AoS LOL
Elmir
personally, I'm still getting the start collecting "malignants" to start my nighthaunt off. I'll just be assembling it as a vampire coven and using the three banshees as heroes. Or I'll use the spirit hosts to make a black coach that's slightly more impressive than the standard model.... And I used some left over chaos cultist legs with left over cavalry bits to make my wraiths: So it can still be a very cost effective army. Makes me wonder if i can do that level of cool for my army ^^;;; Well i've picked up the GHB17 and the nighthaunt starter. Honestly, i don't really mind it all the much. I come from playing lots of horde armies over the years so having a much smaller army means i may actually get something painted for once and not freak out over all the models i need to do. Nighthaunt isn't the strongest of the factions out there, but they can be something your opponent struggles with. I've seen opponents stick long range warmachines in the corners of the bored. Bring the ghosts up from the ground and give him something to worry about. Spirit Hosts with an extra point in armor save (cover or shielded) are hard to shift without mortal wounds. Mourngul becomes terrifying with a 2+ armor save as well. Soulblight is a good fit i think for the Nighthaunt. A couple of vampire wizards to debuff and buff units, as well as having fell bats to race across the board and such. Game wise i'm really interested to get a nighthaunt army up and running to play. Theme wise, sky is the limit. A theme can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. I already have a theme in mind, just need to see if my beginner skills are enough to tackle it. There are worse factions out there to have, were some are just simply allies to other armies, or just have to ally in more powerful stuff to keep up. Balance in this hobby has always been a bit... unbalanced. So armies getting more toys or abilities than others. End of the day we are rolling dice, anything can happen. It may sound a little greedy getting alliance rules and all. But i did hope for a formation for them. Just one would have been nice. Sorry if i seemed a little ranty, just got up and haven't woken up just yet ^^;;;
