Hinterlands: Skirmish Campaigns in the Mortal Realms

Greetings everyone, I have something to share with you all today which is very special to me as I have put a lot of work into this. I present my gaming supplement for Age of Sigmar titled:

Hinterlands: Skirmish Campaigns in the Mortal Realms - Version 1

Here are some screenshots of what to expect:

Hinterlands---Book-Thumbnails.jpg

This is a supplement to play narrative skirmish games in Age of Sigmar, and I've tried to make it look like the real deal.

Enclosed you will find not one, but two campaign systems outlined. The first (titled 'The Hinterlands Campaign') is akin to Mordheim or Frostgrave. Players can create a Warband of a dozen models and battle it out for treasure, gaining skills and experience but also running the risk of injury and death on the way.

The rules for the Hinterlands Campaign are 4 pages long. Just like the core rules. This is not meant to be Mordheim transplanted into AoS, but a skirmish system that embraces everything I love about Age of Sigmar. You'll find Battletraits, Artefacts, and Time of War rules all have a place in the system.

On top of that, the book also introduces a second way to play; the Realm Master Campaign.

The Realm Master Campaign is an additional 2 pages of rules (plus a custom battleplan to set your imagination off) and details how to run an RPG set in the Mortal Realms. It is akin to D&D or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, but is a simple system set firmly in Age of Sigmar at the same time.

I would love to know your feedback and thoughts on the rules contained. And if you want to use them, please do! This is what they are here for! :)

I plan to work on this book further by adding in a hobby section with example Warbands and also a Warband Roster to help manage your games. If you have any more ideas please let me know.

@Galas Wow! What a cracking mini-campaign that sounds like! I am so happy to hear you had fun. I always love to hear about people using the Realm Master campaign section as it doesn't get anywhere near the same amount of spotlight the basic Hinterlands does. Adapting the scenario to make it about Skaven and cave entrances is a fantastic idea and I loved hearing about the adventures the Stormcast and Dwarfs went on together. Do let me know if you play any more games! :D

We played a game recently and we wondered how you would handle units which "transform" into something else.

For instance a dying Pink Horror - will he split into two Blue horrors? Or would you have to pay this for gold as if you would be playing with points?

Also - how is everybody seeing a single Pink Horror casting magic? Technically he is the cheapest full caster in a HInterlands game as a "unit" of Pink Horrors is a Wizard.

Good questions! As per the basic Hinterlands RAW, the Blue Horrors and Brimstone Horrors would not be allowed from a dying Pink horror. This is outlined on Page 3 in the paragraph titled 'Reinforcements'. I think if you wanted to play a bit more loosely you could do so, but you might want to increase the Pink Horror gold cost to account for this. (I would recommend making Pink Horrors 23 gold coins each to account for 14 for the Pink, 5 for the Blue and 4 for the Brimstone).

With regards to Pink horrors, they are a great choice for a cheap wizard. The rules of 1 are used in Hinterlands, and allegiance abilities (including spell lores) are not. This means they can only cast Mystic Shield or Arcane Bolt which hopefully doesn't make them too strong!

Hey Bottle, Fantastic Campaign although i do have a question.

Models with the Hero keyword start with 50 experience. (lvl 5)
Does this mean that they get to roll 5 times on the Advancement Table before the campaign starts?

Or do you not roll and is this just a measure that makes the general less Overpowered at lvl 10?

Great question. This has been asked a couple of times now so I will update the FAQ to include the answer too.

The rule is meant to be played that Heroes do not begin with any advancement rolls. The idea is they already have superior abilities and the 50 experience represents that making them level up slower than regular models.

The rule I am considering (and play testing now) for a future update is that models (regardless of the hero keyword) start with experience based on their wounds profile. I am conscious that currently elite non-hero models such as Kurnoth Hunters are favoured due to the way the rule works.

Love you can still have smaller monsters. They can take up a large portion of your roster, but create interesting, cinematic battles. They are likely to attract a LOT of attention though.
