About this blog

This is my blog to track and record what I have painted and will continue to paint as I work through various projects for my Age of Sigmar models. The first few entries were my old things from my WiP forum thread which will be deleted shortly. New stuff will go up as well of course!

What's been going on?

The return to school put a hammer blow into my regular updates here - I'm blaming that, but it's not really the only reason! I have actually done a few bits and pieces. I'm looking at taking my Freeguild to Blood and Glory in November so I've started prepping for the rebasing of these guys. I've slowly been adding in some new warmachines as well. I finished a Hellstorm Rocket Battery and a Dwarf Organ Gun.  As you can see these guys don't have their bases yet! I've bought the shattered

Water water everywhere

These are copies of a discussion I've been having in a Google+ community about using Water Effects and my experiments so far. Hopefully others can add to it here.  Part 1:  Does anyone know any tutorials or videos for making pools and water effects on bases??? Part 2:  Ok, here is the one I've started working on as a test. I've tried the Vallejo water effects first, but it isn't sitting flat. I'm going to keep adding to it. I've ordered some clear plastic beads to go in be

Warshrine Finished (painting Gold)

I was able to find a bit of time on Christmas Eve to finish off this model. Glad its finally off the painting table and ready for some battles.  The metals were quite challenging. When I've been submitting modes to the Google+ PMP community I have had a lot of feedback about improving the contrast in my golds, so I made an effort to try and do it here. I used GW Retributer Armor as a base that I shaded with Agrax Earthshade. I also used Nuln Oil in the deeper recesses as well. Once it all d

Warhammer Achievements Terrain Part 1

This year at Blood and Glory @Ben has generously donated some space for me to run the latest iteration of Warhammer Achievements, a little tournament that I've run on a somewhat irregular basis due to the birth of my children. This will be the 5th running of the event and I really wanted to do something different so this year I've decided to take a leaflet of Steve Herner's boo and make terrain for all sixteen tables. I quite enjoy a bit of terrain building and when the mood hits its quite easy

Warhammer Achievements Table Maps

For each table at Warhammer Achievements I want to have a map on each table that shows the scenery rules and the secondary objective for that table. Here is the first example that I have put together. To set it up I laid out a board on the living room floor and then stood on the chair with a selfie stick to get the aerial shot. After that it was just a case of importing into photoshop and adding in all the rules and fancy graphics stuff to make it look professional. Hopefully the players will ap

Warhammer Achievements Table 3 - Nurgles Garden (part 2)

The Polluted Pools These are made from the old 40K craters. I picked a set up and they were cheap, but they were a bit broken up. Before I could do anything I had to fix the holes and clean up the dodgy centres. I did this by replacing a lot of the areas with bark and then filling in all the the remaining areas with the air drying clay (I'm becoming a fan of the stuff over filler for different things). Once this was done I sanded the edges and based them onto some hardboard to make them mor

Warhammer Achievements Table 3 - Nurgles Garden

My Nurgle table for Warhammer Achievements is coming along nicely. So far I have done some large slimy line of sight blocking terrain, a polluted Shimmerfalls, some Fetid Swamps, and a floating Island. All that is left is a diseased river which is currently under construction.  The Bloated Growths I used expanding foam to make these, which makes for very quick terrain. I laid out a large sheet of grease proof paper and then squirted an entire can into piles of various sizes. I then lef

Warhammer Achievements Table 2 - The Altar of Khorne

The Plan Here you can see the original drawing I did and the image from the Blades of Khorne book that Inspired it. The first piece I wanted to was a Blood Altar of Khorne.    Building the Alter Base I've wanted to build a lava table for a while and running Warhammer Achievements has given me the option to do it. One of the centre piece items I wanted to build was a big alter that is dedicated to Khorne. I set out by cutting out some blue foam to make the main base and the ste

Warhammer Achievements Table 1 - The Endless Deserts

Table 1: The Endless DesertsThe first job I set myself was making some themed terrain for the project. I wanted a bunch of small scatter terrain pieces, so I had a quick root around in the bitz box cupboard to see what I could find. I came up with half an Arcane Ruins kit that the wife had bought me and a bunch of Battlefield terrain resin crystals. These, I decided, would do nicelyI glued all the bits of arcane ruins together so I had a selection of pillars and columns and then I went to work w

Warhammer Achievements Chapter 1

The first Chapter for Warhammer Achievements charts the journey of a young hero who has a small war band of loyal followers searching for an artefact that will allow you to control your destiny as it gifts you the power of foresight.  Designers Notes: The scenario requires you to find the artefact on a 5+, but you get to add the turn number to this roll, so its possible to find the artefact on the first turn. Their is only one artefact so once its been found that hero becomes a target for t

War Wagon in AoS

I've painted a war wagon for my Free Guild army so I thought I should make some rules up for it. I didn't want it to be over powered as it is a made up scroll and I based it off the Gorebeast Chariot from the warriors list. I also wanted it to stay true to the old rules so put in each weapon as an individual profile.  What do people think? Any changes you'd make, does it seem over powered or under powered? And does anyone else have any home made war scrolls they have made?  Here

Tzangor Shaman

Earlier on I posted an image of the original Skyfire model I painted. I have finished the Shaman to go with them now as well. This was a super cool model to paint. Came together really quickly and I was really happy with it. I cut a few corners to speed up the painting so areas like the robes are just the undercoat with no touch ups, just a few edge highlights, and there are a lot of areas that are deliberately not painted (under the disc, underside of the robes etc. As this is a relatively quic

The World that Was: Orcs and Goblins

I've decided to do a little bit of a retrospective and take a look at some of my older armies. First up is my Orc and Goblin force. My first big event was the South Coast GT in 2010. I had only been back playing for about four or five months, and I painted this up as my first army. It was absolutely rubbish games wise, and I spent the whole weekend knocking around the bottom tables, but it was a great introduction to  the independent tournament scene.  The army got a lot of positive co

The Warshrine!

I've been planning this Warshrine since last Christmas, so I've finally decided to try and get it finished. Originally I had planned to put it in my SCGT 2016 army, but I never managed to get it complete due to personal reasons and so it was left sitting on the painting table. Now that I am working on the Nurgle army I have decided to use it this time as part of my Budget of Sigmar Two Army. However I'd also like it to fit in to the Slaanesh army as well. I have tried to combine the two differen

The Serpents Lair - Terrain from the Realm of Beasts

Last couple of weeks I've been working on the terrain for the a table I want to set in Ghur. I've been trying to think of new colour schemes for the scenery for the tables as this is Age of Sigmar and there is no real reason to keep things traditional. For this set I decided to use a brown scheme, but throw in some yellows and reds for a lot of the detailing.  Scatter Terrain These were made from some of the the terrain that was donated for the event from Garrisimo on Twitter that

The Omniscient Oracles - a Review

The List: This weekend just gone was the South Coast GT in Portsmouth in the UK and I was there with my Tzeentch Disciples (clearly the new powerhouse) so I thought I would give a quick rundown of how the army performed in the different games and what I thought of the list and the battalion. So first up I took 27 Skyfires and..... Actually I didn't do this!  Instead I based my list around the Omniscient Oracles battalion, which for those that don't know is Kairos and three more Lo

The Lords of Change

This weekend is the South Coast GT and I have finally managed to complete all of the models for the Omniscient Oracles Battalion.  It was a fun painting challenge and I developed quite a few cool tricks to help get through them in the time span and keep the models to an acceptable quality level. I used a lot of spray can work to get the base coats done and then dry brushed and washed a lot to get the variation in texture. I then went over the top with the brush to pick out specific details,

The Gaunt Summoner and Colour Theory

This was an early progress shot on the Gaunt Summoner that I painted up for my Tzeentch army as a little break from all the terrain that I had been doing recently. I wanted to do a really fun and brightly coloured miniature, but the problem that this leads to is how do you balance all of these colours so it still works as a model? @Vincent Venturella and @StoneMonk talk a lot about colour theory and the colour triangles and this was something I wanted to try and emulate on the model. However I h

The Dark Elf Sorceress

This was a little piece that I decided to do for the Facehammer GT Painting competition, but in the end I decided that I didn't fancy it as the basing was a bit quick and dirty and didn't really have much detail. The red faces and skulls really don't show up in the photos well either. I was really pleased with the flesh on the model, and she was a lot of fun to paint up.

The Branchwych

I managed yo get this girl painted up quickly for a game I had against some Iron Jaws. I don't normally base my models before painting them, but because the base and the Branchwych have a similar paint style I did them both together, speeding up the paint time. I base coated her with very wet paint so I could wet blend all the browns, gave her a couple of dry brush layers (i need a new dry brush i discovered!) then washed her with various washes. There is no real formula here - I just use very c

The Ancient Waystone

For the Realm of life table I wanted to add in a piece that called back to the Old World, so I thought that an Elven Waystone dedicated to Allarielle would be a nice way of doing this. It could be kept standing through the powers of the wanderers and have some magical effect that bolstered the Sylvaneths power. One of the challenges with making this from blue foam is keeping all the angles consistant. To solve this I b cut a rectangular block and then cut a wedge from a a second piece to ma

Tabletop World Windmill

I've long been an admirer of the Table Top World terrain - it always appears to be excellent quality and well detailed terrain. Some of it is very expensive, but they have a few pieces that are more reasonably priced, and one of these is the Windmill. It turned up quickly and was well packaged, with all the pieces securely packaged inside the main building section. The casting quality is very good as well, and there was barely any clean up needed.  I had a plan for the base that I want

Sylvaneth vs IronJaws

I played my first game with the Sylvaneth recently against my friends Iron Jaws. I only took painted models for this game, so I was a little limited, but I could easily do the 2000 points we had decided on. We also played the comet scenario from the Generals Handbook.  My list consisted of:  Tree lord Ancient (Oaken Armor, an extra spell) Drycha (the spell that generates woods) Branchwych (regrowth) Branch wraith (Acorn of Ages, The Reaping Spell) Spirit of
