Da Funky Mushrooms - Scratch-built Squig Grot Warboss

Recommended Posts

So, some of you might be wondering what happened with my Kharadron Overlords project, and the answer is quite simple, KO models are far too complex and detailed to sculpt a full army while being to expensive for me to afford with my limited student allowance:(, so Barak-Val is on hold until a Start Collecting box gets released or I get a job (let's hope for the first one because there are still years left until I finish all my studies...). However my 40k projects are ALSO on hold as I wait for the release of 8th edition, so I had to do something on the meantime.

I won't unveil too much about it yet, only that I've been wanting to do something like this since my Fantasy days and that it will involve a lot of sculpting. I hope to have something significant to show soon, but for the meantime I'll leave you with a little teaser:

Sorry for the poor quality, this pics were hastily taken while I wait for the greenstuff to dry.

I managed to get the rest of the unit of Squig Hoppers at least to a presentable state, here they are:

IMG_1268.JPG.ba7c8160b7407d78bf86982650178daf.JPGThe squigs are mostly finished, with just some work left on the legs and some spikes to add, while the goblins are in early WIP process, except for the one on the middle, who was made as a test model and is finished. Some of the poses are a little iffy, but this are really different to anything else I have sculpted previously and I'm still getting on hold of the proportions.

I plan on making a full 2000 points army (and maybe more later) completely from scratch, even though I'll be casting the basic grots to save time, as there may still be some time left until the KO Start Collecting box is released:P. They will be Da Funky Mushrooms, a grot moonclan which might consume more mushrooms than they should and run around the mortal realms causing havoc for fun in the name of Mork (or maybe Gork)... I've always loved the Night Goblins in fantasy and wanted to do an army, so I saw this as a fantastic opportunity. Mine extra eccentric and crazy, with lots of weird conversions and mostly fun choices, but I also want them to perform mildly well in the table top, which is why I won't be including Squig Gobbas at the moment...

Any comments will be appreciated, I'm making this army on the run, so any suggestions will be taken into consideration!

What are the white parts of the riders made from?

Also, it looks good for being built from scratch. The one part I dislike are the teeth on the squigs. The 2nd and 4th ones look to flat or drawn on or something to me. The 5th one has the best teeth in my opinion.

The white parts are polymorph, a material I use for press-moulding and making bases for my models to sculpt over.

Thanks a lot for the compliment, it is true that they might look a bit flat, but sculpting each tooth on by one is just too much work. Actually you like the fifth more because he's done in that way, well spotted!

That is really impressive, I wish I had your sculpting skills!!

Thanks! It is just a matter of practice, really!

Really cool stuff. Definitely looking forward to seeing how these turn out.

The Squig second from the right looks so happy with the destruction he's about to bring. Love it!

Thanks a lot! Haha, you're right, he's going to have a good time :P!

So, sorry for the delay, but I had to finish a couple of commissions. However I had some time this afternoon and finished this unit!

They've been loads of fun to sculpt, and I've learned a lot too! Now I'll try to make some basic Grots and cast them until I have enough (do you ever have enough grots?)...

So, I finished a Grot Warboss on Giant Cave Squig which I'll probably use in an upcoming Skirmish campaign at my local store. That said, when I play full AoS, he'll surely have Battle Brew :P!

I'm quite happy with him, I had a lot of fun and learned a lot with this guy, but I know the snotlings could have been better, they were a pain to sculpt at such a tiny scale!
