The Future of AoS...

I'm curious as to what people here think the general overarching direction of AoS is, or if there even is one.  How many Battletomes do you think will actually be released? Do you think GW even have a specific number in mind? If you were in charge where would you take the system?

upwards and onwards. aos is fast becoming Gw's flagship game.

i was in store on tuesday and a couple of teenagers were in store asking about models as they were curious, always liked the look of them etc.  so they hung around for a game to watch ( 40k )  and like 10 minutes into it were like nah. too much stuff to learn once they started browsing the rule book, picked up the aos stuff an asked what that was as they don't recall seeing it before. 20 minutes later they were walking out with a starter stormcast and beastclaw box each.

i mean, that's amazing. these guys who have always liked the look of 40k an the idea of it being put off from the rules and picked up aos in like 20 minutes, people pay a lot of money for uptake like that.

with such high uptake on a game its inevitable that the game becomes more an more flushed out with races an stuff, so id expect to see pretty much most major races. humans, elves, dwarves, slaves to darkness etc to have some sort of all encompassing book. similar to khorne. stormcast etc. this will likely cover all the smaller fractions so then at least everything is updated

It's still growing in popularity I think, and it'll probably get another boost with General's Handbook 2.

I'd like to see GW continue getting creative with the new minis and fluff, surprise us with more cool stuff like the Overlords. It must be pretty fun times for the design team over there with all this world building, I know I'm absolutely loving it and it has really reinvigorated the hobby for me!

I think they will at some point go back on splitting things as much as they did originally; it's too much to ever give everything a Battletome at the rate that GW brings them out, so I think instead they will consolidate some back into one group instead of many small subfactions.

Thing is... I think the way the Alliance system works has given GW the best of both worlds. You have the 4 main Alliances and you could theoretically continue to release Battletomes for small factions as they will always continue to fall under the larger sub factions. Also, if they use the Generals handbook as a way of continually updating and FAQing the game, the number of "factions" could grow and grow.

I think AoS is going to continue to grow and mature. Battletomes will continue to come out every other month or so, with no end in sight.

If I was in charge I would continue to do exactly what they are doing; come out with New Factions and develop the Mortal Realms through Novels and Board Games. I hope they come out with a new set of Campaign books as I enjoyed the RealmGate Wars, dump the Warscroll section so they can lower the price.

It's great to see the fast paced release schedule. Has it been concluded that the idea that fantasy needed faction culling because of lack of store shelf space was incorrect? That's the bit I don't think syncs with ever expanding factions, unless some stuff is direct order only or actually there wasn't ever an issue with store shelf space

They did say they were going to do another worldwide campaign as well later this year. Who knows what realm it will take place in, who the antagonists this time may be, and the long-term effect it might have. With this open world, its easier for us to leave our mark on the world and the overall story of AOS. It seems we might start seeing transports for this game, which I wouldn't mind. It's a new element that could pay dividends. I just hope if/when they try something new that might not work, that they will admit it and either fix it or make it better. From the behind the scenes podcasts surrounding the first Generals Handbook, it seems they are doing a good job of that.

I'm full in, and full lovin' AoS yo'.

I'm thinking at some point we may get collection-style armies.  Like Monsters of Chaos that includes rules for marking or whatever, and Mercenaries & Rogues or something for Order, or a way to get the Deathlords into Flesheaters or whatever.  Things like Firebellies don't seem like they have enough to really do a full faction book on, but, then I wouldn't have thought airship or nakedfire dwarves did either so, maybe they will be a thing.  Anyway, some kind of mechanism to let you get other models into Battletome armies.

Or maybe they won't, and that'll mean there's still a reason to go Grand Alliance allegiance.

Either way, whatever they tell me, I'm buying it.

My only wish for AoS is that they first get the faction system working. I just love the tactical choice of going either highly specialised (with drawbacks in other areas) or going broad but with less synergies etc. :x

But I fear GW has to many factions left over from the world that was to make that work short term. And with the (financial) succes of the new army releases, they would be fools not to focus on that as well.

But we'll see. The possibilities are definitively  enough to keep my interest.

Yeah, my concern is there are too many subfactions, and GW will focus on what they think will sell well rather than bring other factions up.  I would not be surprised if some factions waited years for even a single update while some got several, which is a problem.  It's also IMHO a big problem that faction balance is so varied this early into the game's life when they've had a number of years of seeing what that problem did to both WHFB and 40k, and yet still did it in an extremely short time.  That's problematic to me because it shows they haven't learned.

I'd like to see them use the Generals Handbooks as 'Battletomes' for the Alliances, giving you a reason to take Alliance armies in the same way you take factions - like the first one did, but updated to have the new things that the current Battletomes have implemented.

While I tend to play with the subfactions, I'd love to see multi-faction armies stick around

I have a feeling that the subfaction system is a way for GW to constantly churn armies.  Before AOS hit there was talk of limited releases that weren't around for ever and it looks like GW have realised that new=better in the eyes of the consumer.  Redone sculpts and probably even new units for existing armies don't have the same impact as a completely new force.  With the grand alliances and subfactions GW can keep releasing completely new armies that are still viable purchases for a huge portion of the playerbase as they will be easily brought into their existing armies through the grand alliances, without ever really having to go back and update armies other than the most popular.

not sure i'm that keen on it, but the potential scope is quite exciting. I guess we will see how it pans out!

I think a bit of both. DoT was absolutely massive as it revolutionised the previously third best Grand Alliance; made lots of older models relevant again (Slaves to Darkness); made certain new models relevant again (Archaon); and introduced a brand new sub-faction with sweet models and fluff (Tzeentch Arcanites).

We took an Order alliance army to Adepticon. There was plenty of reason to do so.

I don't think I've been this excited since I started the hobby (which is saying something because I'm pretty fanatical). If they keep remodeling (swidt?) armies a la Bonesplitterz and Tzeentch as well as releasing awesome new ones (Kharadron Overlords) they're in great shape. The way to save on shelf space if that's an issue is swapping out limited releases/better reboxing.

Somehow I think that Joe the Average Gamer is not really so concerned about the three first points, but mainly about the last one.
