Grand Narrative Event at NOVA Open 2017

We hosted our 2nd year of AoS games at NOVA Open in 2016 and had a great time with a new narrative event which included 9 rounds of games in a linked series set in a small region of the Realm of Shadows. You can read a general report of the narrative with lots of pictures here: https://fancywars.wordpress.com/2016/09/24/age-of-sigmar-narrative-event-at-nova-open-2016/

We're planning a larger narrative event in 2017, bringing back the ships we had last year along with some new features, calling it a grand narrative, which will include large and small battles across 6 different but linked events with 13 rounds of games to continue the struggle in Dawnland over the course of the 4-day convention during Labor Day weekend. I welcome and appreciate any feedback in the next week before registration goes live on February 1st concerning the player's guide on the PRIMER LINK.

The post for this event in Virginia, USA is on the TGA CALENDAR

And you can find out more about all of the AoS events we're planning--a matched play GT, a doubles team tournament, and a KidsHammer event here: http://www.novaopen.com/age-of-sigmar/

I would link this post in the past report [emoji4] Lot's of interested people there. Also Love the boats and report, but sadly a lot of pictures are missing. [emoji20]

The pics on the link all work for me when using a computer browser, but not so much on a phone--I'm not sure how to fix, sorry.

I've updated the link for last year's narrative report.

But I want to talk about this year! We're adding unique warlord warscrolls which will work in a Warband system based on the Path to Glory tables. (Thanks to the Realms at War guys for this idea!)

Each player's warlord will gain Renown and upgrades during games played. Here is the Monk:

I do public narrative events, but not to the scale or popularity of NOVA.   (we have 20 - 30 players)  I'm interested in maybe promoting a larger scale narrative event.

What are the NOVA events like?  Are the army lists generally tournament-powered lists as well?  The events I run, tournament level lists are discouraged, but I am wondering how others are doing these.

The 40K narrative events at NOVA are popular, but not on the scale you may be thinking. Last year we had only 12 players in the AoS narrative events, so it was easy to have fun with it, and we started with a world building session that created some unique rules for the entire event. Also, everyone was put onto teams, so most of the competitive element was tied into working as a team rather than winning at all costs as individual players. We definitely had MORE players in the more competitive tournament AoS event. ;)

The 40K narrative event was a bit larger, but not by much--I think they only had around 30 players. So, honestly, if you think you can get 20-30 narrative players for an event then you're already on the same scale as NOVA. Back in 2015, only 2 months after AoS came out, we only had SIX players. Running a narrative event with a full dozen players last year felt like an awesome crowd, and it was. But I'd hardly call it popular considering we were next to WarmaHordes.

If you haven't already checked out the blog report I posted with lots of pictures then check this out: https://fancywars.wordpress.com/2016/09/24/age-of-sigmar-narrative-event-at-nova-open-2016/

This year we've split up the grand narrative into 6 different events, and we're using modified Path to Glory tables. The primer is available on the NOVA Open website, and you're more than welcome to check it out for ideas, etc: https://novaopen.sharepoint.com/_layouts/15/WopiFrame.aspx?guestaccesstoken=N148FklhjU37lioiD47XyBJIVvbvD2Zn4A16zZBtym0%3d&docid=0045ffc297b0248ad95792daf88ab9c15&action=view

All the Time of War rules are still being put together, but we've improved on some elements we used last year (like the "narrative cards") and added some new things we "borrowed" from some other recent narrative events like Realms at War 16 and the Rise of Empires campaign.

ALSO: have you heard about the Coalescence narrative event scheduled for June 10th? Getting involved with that could be a great way to organize and run a narrative event with some wider implications, and if nothing else you might get some ideas reading the event pack when it comes out. I definitely suggest you check it out! http://bit.ly/Coalescence2017
