Skirmish in AoS 2.0

Recommended Posts

Wow the Soul Wars preview was hot on Twitter today. My Question, did you notice that they mentioned "Skirmish at Realms Edge" with the Malign Sorcery book?

It would seem entirely possible that current skirmish ruleset would need to get some updates to match 2.0. I've not given much thought yet to whether all the new rules work well with skirmish. Look out sir could would need to be modified to 3 or more units/models. Shooting works. Command points is really interesting...hero warbands anyone?

So I wonder if this is a brand new skirmish ruleset (inside Malign Sorcery rather than GHB18 is curious) or if it's simply a set of campaign battleplans and add-ons. Specifically mentioned hunting down rogue endless spells...

What do you think?

My first thought is, that it is more of an Add-on.

The point is, GW didn't set the Books for Skirmish or Path to Glory on 'last chance to buy', like with the Stormcast Eternals Battletome or the Generals Handbook 2017.

If the books should be replaced I think they would be 'last chance to buy' by now.

I think the Mailgn Sorcery add-ons for Skirmish will be similar to the ones in Malign Portents: A few tables and a Battleplan or two. There will probably be a few modifications to the Endless Spells to make them more suited to single-model units in Skirmish.

I imagine the in-game (or after-game) rewards for unbinding them (as the narrative motivation for chasing them down) will make them less potent in the campaign.

As far as changes to Core Rules go I can imagine that they won't change anything. Things like Look Out Sir just won't get used, in the same way as Summoning is currently "turned off" in Skirmish.

Weirdly my group had already started discussing a Skirmish campaign based around the idea of bounty hunting wizards (and their henchmen) hunting down Endless Spells. The campaign in the book sounds just right for us!

I think I agree with everything you guys have said. Having a chance to look back at the skirmish rules, it doesn’t ‘add-on’ a lot of rules and the ones it clarifies still work.

That said, there are new rules that, with current knowledge, aren’t compatible.

1. Look out Sir states proximity to a unit with 3+ models in it. So this either needs a tweak or it’s left out because of the wording which could be intentional and good.

2. Summoning would still be gone.

3. Endless spells would be OP but that’s the book skirmish gets addressed so that seems thoughtful.

4. Everything else seems compatible at first blush.

thats spell hunter idea was in one of the articles and caught my attention too. I suggested it could be a wizard class in upcoming AoSrpg. Such a compelling idea.

thanks guys.

This was my favorite part of the reveal yesterday. I'd love a slight re-work of the skirmish rules to make them more like the Hinterlands rules. I'd like a refinement of how models are chosen/added/what they are worth points wise, maybe a better progression system for heros, and a way for summoning and look out sir to work. With it being wizards hunting spells, it seems like summoning should be added in.

yeah there are definitely a few things i'd love to see reworked, summoning being one of them...but that will be difficult given all the different ways armies summon. it's not just a warscroll thing now. That said, I think you could implement Look Out Sir as a house rule that requires 3 friendly models within 3" and take out the 'a unit' wording.

Hey,

As someone about to run their fourth Matched Play Skirmish Tournament this Sunday (including Malign Portents stuff for the first time), I would absolutely love to see Skirmish continue to receive add-ons and updates in AoS 2.0 - would hate for it to be overlooked or forgotten as it's a lot of fun!!

Personally I was hoping for a new book (or dedicated section in GHB2018) with a new and updated points list for everything. That is still a possibility though I guess and regardless, providing points costs online like they recently did with the newer books is still more that satisfactory IMO.

Yeah I'm also a huge fan of Skirmish (and Path to Glory) and I hope that both continue to be viable into the new edition.  They are both especially great for weeknight gaming racing against a store's closing time....

From what I can guess based on leaks and such, both *should* still work fine.  Some of the PtG starting warbands might end up being a bit off, but some of them are already a bit off, so that's no big thing.  And I don't really see anything that would break Skirmish yet.  So I'm pretty optimistic.

I have a sneaky suspicion that we will see skirmish V2 6 months or so down the line. GW will  get the big AoS2 releases out the way- the new starter, the new additions for starter armies, then the rumoured 2 new armies (That part I'm really not sure about, seems wishlisting, but people have been claiming GW have said it, but I've not seen a link sourced) then when it quiets down and we return to new 40k releases and/or the rumoured specialist games release near christmas they will drop a new skirmish book.

I am only guessing of course but:

Skirmish still seems to be a thing: Skirmish battle plans in the new books
Skirmish rulebook not on last chance to buy
Sam 'Bottle' James getting scooped up by GW
Bottle removing the hinterlands ruleset immediately afterwards
40k is getting kill team (which will have RPG elements!)

I honestly think that points to GW keeping skirmish around, especially as it seemed so popular and a very cheap way of getting people into the hobby or porting over from 40k. Even more so as it must have been a very cheap or at least easy and fast turnaround time to knock out the first skirmish rulebook, and at a very small cost increased miniature sales. I think they will be going for a more in depth skirmish game this time around though- due to the popularity of both the hinterlands rules and necromunda; necromundas success has had people crying out for a mordheim reprint.

Maybe give it a month or so after soul wars release, let the new edition hype calm, then we start dropping mentions of skirmish on every AoS facebook post till GW either drops a hint or two!

My guess on this is that they will not include any modification to Look Out Sir.

It will mean LOS just won't work, which I suspect will be on purpose.

With the smaller number of models on the board it's easier to see the leader. Considering  how powerful and expensive Heroes are in Skirmish compared to normal troopers, adding LOS could make Heroes too strong.

Whilst I'm happy to make my own custom ones, as I enjoy that anyway, to support the format properly each unit needs a skirmish specific warscroll. At the moment they range from pointless to insanely broken. Check out ogor grots for example, they are insane!

What`s so insane about them? The hit terribly and die easy.

Check out screen shot of warscroll below. 1/6 chance of causing d3 mortal wounds to any model that charges within 3" of each individual grot in your warband (as each figure is a unit in skirmish).

miss the days when AoS hadn't have points. People were simply forced to do that.

Amen to that, my main game is 2e/1e homebrew fantasy battle, pre army lists. For AoS I mainly make my own warscrolls for everything, that way the games are interesting based upon my collection, don't have to have purchased dictated by rules, etc.
