probably a stupid question.

but can I give an artefact to a unit leader? 

Also can I give a ironjawz artefact to an allied Grot shaman.

No to both things. In matched play only HERO units can take artefacts and allied units never profit from allegiance abilities like warlord traits or artefacts.

In  most cases allies can't get Artefacts because they don't have the required Keyword (that's the only thing that the rules  tell us at Page 76, Allies, last paragraph).

Quote

A Grot Shaman in an Ironjaws allegiance Warband can't get an Ironjaws artefact, because of the missing Ironjaws Keyword but if the Ironjaws use The army is Irowjaws Allegiance and uses Destruction Allegiance Abilities  (like for example page 116 of the GH2017 tells us )  the Shaman could get an Artefact and profit from battletraits because required is DESTRUCTION.

 

So the Statement "never profit from allegiance abilities" is wrong
