Swooper
Hi everyone! This thread is made to post stuff I paint that doesn't belong to my Brayherd, mostly Silver Tower for now but other things later. I had already painted roughly half of the Silver Tower minis: The Gaunt Summoner and familiars, Ogroid Thaumaturge and half of the Kairic Acolytes, Tzaangors and Horrors. For completeness' sake, here are some pictures of those. That left me the other half of the Acolytes, Tzaangors and horrors, the Grot Scuttlings, the Skaven Deathrunner and all the heroes. The main reason I hadn't painted the rest of the minions yet was that I didn't feel like painting identical models again, so to avoid that I went to a bits site and got Tzaangors and horrors from their respective boxed sets, and bought a whole box of Acolytes at my FLGS. The rest of them will be used in a future conversion project I have planned (after the Brayherd is done to a satisfactory level). I've been working on the first hero for the past week and a half, and the Darkoath Chieftain is now complete! I decided to do him in a very Slaanesh-y colour scheme - pale skin, dark leather and metal, purple cloth and so on. Next up are the five remaining horrors, which I'm going to paint in a batch. Swooper
I finished the horrors this week, and did a quick photoshoot today. I thought the pink horror didn't have enough tentacles, so I made a few extra out of greenstuff. Not super happy with the colour, he ended up more pink and less pale than I wanted, due to too much Pink Horror and not enough Rakarth Flesh in the base coat mix, but... oh well. Group shot of all the horrors! You can see there's a little difference in the skin tone of the pinks with them side by side, the shadows came out darker too for some reason. I started working on the Grot Scuttlings right after finishing the horrors, and as of now they're almost ready, just need to finish the bases and some tidying up! The results are not great, but at least painting with washes is quick...
Swooper
Grot scuttlings complete! I'll be honest, I really don't like these sculpts, so I put minimal effort into painting them. To get them done as quickly as possible, I primed them white and used mostly just washes to paint them. Agrax Earthshade and Nuln Oil for the robes, Athonian Camoshade for the skin, Agrax and Seraphim Sepia for leather, just Sepia for their teeth and just Agrax for the wood bits (multiple layers of them all to get proper coverage, of course). Picked out their toenails with Ushabti Bone, the spiderwebs and some of the stitching on their robes with Rakarth Flesh, weapons and other metal bits in Leadbelcher and eyes with Mephiston Red. Also ended up doing some soft highlights on the skin with Elysian Green (which is, like, an exact match for the pigment in Camoshade), and drybrushed the metal with Runefang Steel after a layer of Nuln Oil. Minimal effort on the bases as well, just Armageddon Dust painted Mechanicus Standard Grey, shaded with Nuln Oil and drybrushed with Dawnstone. Results are acceptable for such a low effort, but I don't think this "painting with washes" style jives well with my usual painting style. It comes out quite splotchy in some spots, which is fine for dirty grotlings but not an effect I'm usually after. Also, probably better for models intended to be a lighter colour, I had to do four layers of Camoshade to get their skin right and like five or six on the robes. Used them in a Silver Tower run last night where we got our fourth amulet piece, it's gratifying to see more painted minis on the board than when we started off with proxies and grey plastic! Hoping to finish painting everything before we face the Gaunt Summoner, at least! The urge to return to my herd for a while has overpowered me though, and I've started working on a single minotaur and mini-herdstone objective marker for now. After that, I'm probably looking at painting the Fyreslayer Doomseeker and maybe the Skaven Deathrunner(s).
Greyshadow
These are fantastic Swooper. I love your very evocative and moody painting style. I think your scuttlings look great by the way! Nice work
Swooper
Second hero done, the Fyreslayer Doomseeker! I took the liberty of assuming the crest and braid are, in fact, not his hair. The crest is done with no less than seven colours: Kantor Blue basecoat, Coelia Green all over wash, Alaitoc Blue drybrush everywhere, Ahriman Blue drybrush about half way down, Sotek Green drybrush just near the top and then Baharroth Blue drybrushed just on the edge. I then added some Druchii Violet right at the base where the crest meets the helmet, just to enhance the colour gradient a little more. I also decided that the runes on his body are scarification rather than embedded pieces of gold, so they're just flesh coloured with some Carroburg Crimson.
Swooper
Skaven Deathrunners done! First skaven models I've ever painted, I can see myself doing more of that some day. Maybe I'll get the skaven Shadespire warband? Who knows. Anyway, I wanted to pick a distinctive colour scheme for them and went with orange as a main colour. I would have used green as a secondary colour, but there weren't really any details except the eyes that I could paint green, everything else was either metal or leather straps. The bases are made with brown stuff and a roller from GreenStuffWorld - city feel to match the Shadespire skaven. First time I use a roller, next time I need to make sure the putty layer is a bit thicker as the detail didn't really come out everywhere on the bases. But that's okay, I just hid it with some sand.
Swooper
Hey-o! Been a while since I posted here. I have been meaning to take proper pictures of the Kairic Acolytes I finished a couple of weeks ago (and posted in the WIP Wednesday thread), but have been lazy (and busy painting minotaurs, see: my brayherd thread). Here they finally are! The shield is upside down, I know. I only realised after the plastic cement had dried. It's fine, none of the people I play Silver Tower with know what the Tzeentch symbol looks like! I am particularly happy with the colours on this one, the pink/purple and emerald green feathers together with the blue and gold looks really striking. These colours could be a great base for a whole army's colour scheme. Got some more green in on the bird! Another thing I've been tinkering with for a while, I finally finished assembling and priming yesterday. It's a Lord of Slaanesh conversion made from the Knight-Questor. (the lumps on his shield arm and around his neck are poster putty) Other kits that contributed pieces to this: Chaos Chariot (head), Chaos Knights (shield), Chaos Marauder Horsemen (belt buckle), Empire Battlemages (flaming sword), Gors (horns on the shoulderpad). Would love to hear some opinions on this! Finally, I've had an urge lately. An urge to paint Stormcast, specifically the new Sacrosanct models. I gave in yesterday and bought a pack of easy-build secrators to do some colour tests... but first, headswaps. Because I really don't like their masks. Heads contributed by the chaos warriors kit. This guy got the Knight-Questor's sword. I prefer swords to the mauls most of them wield, and supposedly the multipart kit will have swords, so I wanted to see how that would look. No need to headswap the prime, she looks great with the bareheaded option. I'll probably start painting them tonight! The main colours I have in mind are either gold or bronze armour, red cloth with some white to break it up, jade shields, weapons and pauldrons, but I have several options on how to paint each colour that I want to test on these guys. makeshifts
Loving everything, especially the doomseeker. The blue is very elaborate and works great with such a good blonde.
Swooper
Sequitor colour tests completed. These two have the same concept, but different approaches to individual colours that I may end up mix-and-matching. Would love opinions on those choices: Armour: Gold or bronze? Jade: Darker or lighter shade? Robe: Darker or lighter red? Tabard/inside robe: White or cream? Leather: Brown or black? Potion/magic colour: Orange or turquoise? I will be on vacation abroad for the next 10 days, so I'll have plenty of time to mull it over! Edited July 13, 2018 by Swooper
Kramer
Looking good! I like the darker choices. But maybe add a bit of contrast with a white tabard and or orange potion.
Swooper
I needed a quick break from my beasts so I decided to paint up a conversion I made last year, a Lord of Slaanesh on foot. He's made of a Knight-Questor (with all Sigmarite iconography filed off), a head from the chaos chariot kit, a chaos knight's shield and a flaming sword from the Empire battlemage kit, as well as a pair of gor horns I put on his shoulderplate along with some greenstuff to turn the lion head into a more daemonic visage. I'll gladly admit that my sculpting is terrible, but faces are hard and it's the best I could do. The OSL turned out better than I expected, and better than it looked like it would right until I managed to fix it with some glazing at the end. Painting the cloak was fun! I love organic surfaces like cloth where you can slowly build up highlights through multiple layers. Swooper
I recently painted up a D&D character of mine, converted out of mainly the Steelheart model for Warhammer Underworlds. His helmet got swapped in from the Marauder Horsemen kit and the wings are from the Reaper Dragonman Conversion Kit. He's an 18th level half-dragon gestalt crusader//dragon shaman, for those of you familiar with D&D 3.5! His armour and sword both have a slight green tinge, done with Coelia Greenshade, because both are made of adamantine and I wanted to distinguish that from regular steel. It's actually more visible in these photos than to the naked eye. Also, notice the reflections of the plume on his chestplate and helmet, and the white cloth on the sword. I'm quite proud of those, even if they're not perfect. I think this might be the first time I paint pupils in eyes. I don't work a lot with human faces usually... The wings are painted by mixing true metallic gold paint into browns and yellows, to represent the weirdly hybrid organic/metallic nature of his gold dragon ancestry. Unlike the green tint to the armour, the metallic shine of the wings is more visible to the naked eye.
Swooper
Finished my Untamed Beasts for Warcry this weekend, and managed to take some half-decent pictures today. Lighting is not great this time of year and I don't have a good lightbox setup, so these will have to do. The skin is all painted with the new dark skin triad from Citadel (Catachan Flesh, Bloodreaver Flesh, Knight Questor Flesh), with Naggaroth Night mixed into the shadows and a wash of Druchii Violet. I can't decide whether I really want to, or really DON'T want to see the creatures some of those jawbones came off. I usually just use the same colour for bones, teeth and horns on models, but I realised these guys have a LOT of that going on so I needed something to break that up. Ended up painting the horns and teeth from a Zandri Dust base, and the bone from a Rakarth Flesh base. Worked like a charm, I think. Should, in retrospect, maybe have painted the skin of the Rocktusk Prowler some shade of light brown rather than grey, it's a bit monotone like this. Oh, well. I've said it before in other places, but I really, really like the new Gal Vorbak and Wordbearers Reds. Such a lovely shade of orangeish red! Here seen with Barak Nar Burgundy shadows, a wash of Druchii Violet and edge highlighted with Squig Orange. The bases were kind of low effort, two types of texture paint (Armageddon Dust and Astrogranite Debris), painted, washed and drybrushed, and then a tuft or two on each base. I used Thunderhawk Blue to drybrush the rubble to contrast with all the warm tones on the models. And a couple of group shots at the end! That's all I've got for now, until next time...
