syph0n
Hi everyone! Been in the hobby off and on (mostly off) for 23 years. My Dark Elves started around 2005 with a box of spears, then when the plastic corsairs came out, a couple of boxes of them and some cold ones. Collected a load more again in 2009 ish, but again, they've remained unassembled or grey. Always meant to start afresh with the launch of AoS, but yet again, life took over. Well, it's time to start again. Order Serpentis, 1k to start with, using models I already own (a few more than I can use pictured): Will be using the dragon (a High Elf conversion pre the Dark Elf launch dragon), a hydra (new to replace the ancient metal one!) 2x5 Dreadknights and I can choose between the chariot, sorceress and assassins to begin with. Theme: Blue skinned, though going to make this more grey with the unpainted models. Purple plate armour, silver chain mail, glossy black, bits of gold, and blue green style sea dragon cloaks. Unsure of colour for the hydra or dragon (black, but thinking of the highlight). The snow bases will be redone, now I have some actual snow stuff to use! First model, to ease me in, was selected by my 7 year old son. I hoped he'd pick the sorceress, but selected another assassin: Think he liked the claw! Aiming to have a good chunk ready by the end of March, playing the first proper matched game on 23rd with a mate who is also returning to the hobby! Hope to have most done by then... We'll see. Any more pics wanted, any questions, please ask!
syph0n
Update! Started about 6 I think, so around 3 hours work probably all in. Face to finish, grey highlight and bases but about there. Went for less skin, more clothing. Very stealth. Probably unlikely to run 2 assassins (unless I run a Shadowblade list for a laugh), but here's a closer look at his older bro: Added some blood. The technical paints are very good! Feel happy to have a model under the belt for the first time in a long time. New paints are excellent and the washes just get better. Still dipped back to the old paints for some Tin Bitz however!
AthlorianStoners
Cool theme man, getting a dark elf from skyrim vibe. Excited to see more!

I've only just played Skyrim for the first time, picked it up on the Switch. It's excellent. I can see what you mean! Will finish this chap tonight hopefully, but I'm finding it harder to see now I'm a bit older than I was when I first started. Next, I've got a hot date with a Sorceress... If I knew what it was, I'd probably use the recipe for Tenebrael Shard's skin or Mistweaver. I think I'm in too deep with the blue now however... syph0n
Finished my Assassin and added some fresh snow to my older models. Took about 40 mins. Front: Rear: With the boys: So, what next? Have another assassin, a sorceress or do I finish the 1st of my Drakespawn Knights? Feeling that the sorceress might be the way to go, but I probably should get a battleline under my belt and do some batch painting. Nearly finished that Drakespawn and the others are only a little behind, so just the knights really.
AthlorianStoners
Damnnnnn man, your painting is awesome! Excited to see the sorcerer painted up.
syph0n
Made a start tonight on the Sorceress. Shouldn't have really, it won't feature in my force until 1250 points, to be fair, neither will the assassins! It's such an old model. The metal isn't in particularly good nick and parts were broken and reattached that I now realise weren't done very well. Nevermind, it's a good excuse to buy one of the newer Sorceress models in time...
syph0n
Well, she's not far off finished. I rushed a bit because I found it a really tough model to paint. It's an old sculpt with some wonky bits, a broken staff and it lacks the "fineness" of new sculpts. However, I only have Malus and a BSB conversion from an old Cold One Knight that's all that old now! I also recognise I really need to work hard on eyes... Need tips here. I'll do some daylight tidying and base tomorrow. I think next will either be Lokhir Fellheart, who will just be a plain old Fleetmaster to round off a basic 1k list, or I should probably get stuck in to painting my Drakespawn Knights! Batch painting somehow is motivating at times.
AthlorianStoners
Nice work man! Lovely painting. Selfishly, I’d like to see how you’re knights turn out so do them next
Swooper
2 hours ago, syph0n said: I also recognise I really need to work hard on eyes... Need tips here. Paint the eyes first, then it doesn't matter if you smudge. It's easier to paint the face colour up to the eyes afterwards. Of course, I cheat and paint mostly chaos creatures I can just give glowing eyes, which are a lot easier than eyes with pupils!
syph0n
Hi @SwooperI painted her eyes first and used a purple wash to shade, hopefully with the effect of it being a bit more feminine! However, I just can't seem to replicate how I did it on the assassin! His eyes were relatively easy to paint. I've ended up leaving her pupils white, which I can pass off as being something magical and sorceress like! My friend collects Slaves to Darkness and he's going red eyes ? @AthlorianStoners thanks again. I really should do all the knights as that's the bulk of my force. It means I can treat myself to paint my dragon or hydra. It's been a very long time since I've painted something so big. I may end up doing the Lokhir model because he's so damn cool though. Edit: a better daylight photo, pre-basing...
syph0n
Treated myself to a Balewind Vortex. It's a proper crappy model, far beneath the standard of the newer plastics. Obviously it's cheaper, made in China etc. Doesn't even glue together very well. Gonna need my liquid greenstuff!
syph0n
Made some progress on the Drakespawn. Finding the colours I used before, probably the the best part of 7 years ago wasn't easy! Think I have it now. Some WIP: So lower half is Calthan Brown, Ogryn Flesh, Khemri, Dheneb, wash again, Dheneb. Upper half is a darker green, green wash, lighter green dry brush, wash and then dry brush a turquoise ish colour mixed with metallic medium. Will then use a blue or black wash I think in very specific areas. I hope the metallic medium is subtle enough to give the scales an almost fish scale look. Iridescent? What I have discovered is I really like the jade/turquoise straight on black for the Black Dragon... Use a more direct colour on the Hydra then the lizards are all unified. syph0n
Learning a lot painting the drakespawn. I will be completely drybrushing the next batch, that's a fact. Try to reduce the amount of mixes I'm doing because I did 3 with a progression to the lighter highlights and 2 drybrush with final highlights and there's hardly a difference! Need to do the final details tomorrow and hope to make a start on the knights. I might well drop a blue or green wash over the scales to darken them slightly too. See what daylight brings. Twitch of Izalith
Very cool looking army dude! Nice to see that really old Morathi (1994 I think?) figure getting some table time and every time I see some of the metal Shades I get regrets that I sold mine! Had to scratch some up out of shadow warriors when I started playing sigmar. They don't look bad with some crossbows from the darkshards kit and Black Arc Corsair swords but I get nostalgic for the old stuff Is that a high elf dragon? I wanted to add another dragon to my Darkling covens army but I'm not at all sure about the dragonlord kit - It doesn't look great in the webstore photos but I've not got a look at the actual model yet. syph0n
@Twitch of Izalith Yeah that's definitely the HE dragon. The black dragon model didn't exist when I last stopped playing, and when I came back when AoS launched, I didn't buy the 8th Ed dragon or whenever it launched. I removed all the gems, damaged the wings (gently) and added the chains at the front from actual chain. I layered superglue around the joints to seal the chain on place and it's proved quite robust. I've also added some adornments on the dragon's armour from drakespawn kit. The rider uses the original rider's legs, and I used a Corsair body, bending the sea dragon cloak with a candle. I used a the arms off the high elf kit, but with slight adjustments. Will use a shield from the drakespawn kit again, though I do have a few spare ancient metal drakespawn knight shields I could use. Helmet is off a different dark elf range. I still have some metal shades, unpainted. Won't use them I don't imagine, too hard to include under the current faction system. Also have 20 metal Black Guard, again, not sure whether to sell. Great models though.
syph0n
Perhaps hard to tell in a WIP shot... Did a blue wash on some muscle sections on the Drakespawn and then all the silver. Tidied up the black. Next, gold, highlight silver, bone coloured spines, teeth and claws and red eye... Then on to the Knights. @Twitch of Izalith took a couple of shots for you of the dragon and dreadlord:
Twitch of Izalith
Thanks @syph0n the dragon looks good without the armour pieces - and the reins it comes with. I really like what you did with the chain to replace them. I have a pretty big collection of leftover bits from all kinds of elf kits at this point so i'm sure I will be able to find some stuff to make one of these fit in with everything else. syph0n
Drakespawn done. Ish. Knights next, which is good because I'm fed up of scales! Need to sort my photography out, my phone camera is ******.
syph0n
Bit more tonight. Based the drakespawn with a slightly different snow method: Re-based the other models so far with the massive amount of spare snow I'd made: Also did a base coat on the knights and Malus. Malus will be a Dreadlord in a friendly 500 pt intro game this weekend, and will probably end up as just a knight if I can get my hands on 3 drakespawn to use with some older knight models. Soulsmith
Nice! I have always been super curious about how a newer cold one would look with Malus Darkblade's mount's head. Seems to fit! Consider that stolen
