Malign Portents - A Tale of ??? Warlords

Recommended Posts

The Warhammer Community article on Malign Portents mentions a community paint along that will be happening across the world and I thought it might be fun to have a rolling TGA Community post for. Having already been planning a new army for the New Year, as I suspect many of us are, I thought that this could be excellent motivation if other people were interested... If not, it'll just be me on my own I guess :D

The Community Site article can be found here and I think it's almost certainly going to be the same as the new White Dwarf A Tale of Four Warlords article:

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2018/01/04/malign-portents-the-time-is-nighgw-homepage-post-1/

With the specific wording:

We want to make sure that by the time the Malign Portents are fully revealed, everyone has an army to face the coming tide of darkness with. To that end, we’re inviting you to take part in a worldwide muster over the next few months. By following along with each step, you’ll have a fighting force worthy of the challenges to come.

For your first challenge, we’re asking you to paint a Start Collecting! set of your choice. Perhaps all this talk of Death has you wanting a Deathrattle skeleton horde of your own, or maybe you fancy ransacking the realms with an army of Ironjawz. Every Warhammer and Games Workshop store around the world will be joining in (and there may even be some prizes on offer), giving you the chance to show off your newly recruited host. If you don’t live near a store, don’t worry – you can follow along with the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Facebook page. You’ll be able to showcase the first part of your army on the 10th of February, where we’ll also be announcing what you need to paint to join in with the next stage of the muster.

My only amendment to the above, will be that you can paint the equivalent of a Start Collecting Box, if your army does not have one, or if you prefer not to use the pre-built boxes. This would normally be at least a battleline unit, a character and a specialist unit, but I think, as this should work for you, the painter and collector of the army, then whatever you think is appropriate.

So, having received a reasonable haul of Stormcast Eternal Vanguard Hunters for Christmas and in lieu of a Start Collecting Box ;), I will aim to paint:

1 x Lord Castellant

1 x Gryph-hound

5 x Vanguard-Hunters

3 x Vanguard-Raptors with longstrike crossbows

3 x Aetherwings

I hope others are interested and I look forward to seeing what this community can do!

If you dont mind me having already started I'll throw myself in with this with my Shysish Inspired Sylvaneth. Trees from the realm of death who stand with Nagash, none respect the cycle of life to death more than the forest, they understand the balance of all things in life must ultimately end in death. Life abundant would lead to overcrowding, starvation as food begins to run short, pestilence from faeces and crowded quarters, ultimately chaos.

My "Start Collecting" equivalent:

Treelord Ancient
Treelord Ancient
5 Tree Revenant
5 Tree Revenant
3 Kurnoth Hunters (bows)

This is great.

I was already thinking of starting a new Ironjawz army but did't  like the look of the Start Collecting box. The Malign Portents had me reconsidering.

I've already got 10 Ardboyz/Black Orcs unpainted that I never got round to doing for my 8th edition Savage Orc army and I thought the Weirdnob Warband would be a better box to start with (more new models).

1 x Weirdnob Shaman

5 x Brutes

10 x 'Ardboyz

Whilst I'm cracking into eldar, I would also like to get paint on my nurgle so I'll do the nurgle half of blightwar, and can stretch goal myself from there 3 my additional forces, so:

10 plaguebearers (stretch another 10)

3 nurglings (stretch another 3)

3 plague drones

1 horticulous slimux

The 10th of February may be a bit tight for me to finish a whole box (none of it is built or undercoated yet).

I will have a go at a start collecting Khorne Deamons box

Wait. The whole kit needs to be painted by  the 10th? I thought that's when we started showing _some_ pieces.

I can't do a whole Start Collecting box in a month...  :/

Agreed, I will do my best but I think GW thinks everyone works in a place where they can paint all day :D

Yeah, the deadline is very tight, although I think the first month is the hardest and it's very much about getting the army to the table for Malign Portents properly kicking off.

I'm planning to leave out some edge highlighting if I start getting behind and returning to it once I have the whole army done, but I'm hopeful that I can paint to a reasonably good standard in the time available.

At the end of the day it's something that I'm excited about and challenging myself to, but if I fail, or don't keep up, then I think I'll learn something from the experience. Better still, if one or more people can manage it, then I think it'll be a great achievement and interesting to have documented.

I think its more GW is catering to those who paint to basic TT standard, for example sylvaneth getting started could easily be knocked out by spraying dark brown, dry brushing and then picking out leaves in no time.

That is probably true, I can never leave a model at TT standard. I get sucked in!

Argh, I'd love to, but I just cracked open my Khorne Bloodbound SC! box last week and I've already done three Blood Warriors. Do you think that means I'm too far ahead? I'm not going to start another new army with this one just added to the shame pile, but I'd like to follow along with this.

I wouldn't think you are too far ahead. That SC box has a couple (3) more models than the Stormcast box. And I would argue more involved painting as well. Especially with 3 cavalry. Plus it's more about getting in on the fun. being part of the 'muster'. Do it!

Nah of course not it's all for fun anyway!

No, absolutely not too far ahead, so definitely jump in. It's all for fun, mutual motivation and to have an army ready in time for the full reveal of Malign Portents.

I've just started a Host of Slaanesh/ Daughters of Khaine army, and haven't even finished assembling it, so will probably be joining this (and hopefully the GW global event later on when they don't ask for a whole Start Collecting...).

Will probably do something like:

- One Blood Cauldron/ Herald on Exalted Seeker Chariot

- 10 witches/ daemonettes

- 5 Doomfire Warlocks/ Hellstriders

I think this might be something good fun to jump into :D See if I can actually use it as motivation to get things painted!!

I recently bought the daughters of khaine allies box to begin expanding for a force to accompany my freeguild in my mixed order and since they have no start collecting that should suffice nicely. So for me it will be:

1x Death Hag

10x Witch Aelves

1x Blood cauldron / Bloodwrack Shrine

1x Bloodwrack Medusa

Now if only I could decide on a colour scheme... don't want to go exactly with the same yellow&blue of my freeguild... perhaps blue and white with a darker skintone? (Darker skintone will fit with the amazon freeguild militia I use)

Malign Portents is just the motivation I need to start tackling my collection of Death models. For this I'm aiming to paint:

1x Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon
5x Blood Knights (converted from Dragon Princes)
10x Skeletons (20 stretch)

If I find myself with extra free time (ha!) I may just finish up the Nagash that's been sitting half painted for a year, staring at me with disapproval.

I'm all over this! Prior to Christmas I painted a small handful of models as the start of an Anvilgard army, but I didn't touch the Anvilgard box set itself until a few days ago. It's got to be about double the number of miniatures compared to a Start Collecting box, and I'm usually the world's slowest painter, but by damn this is getting painted by the deadline! I'm feeling pumped!

Made a start on the Black Ark Corsairs from the box set, plus I thought people might like to see the stuff I did earlier:
