Causing more wounds than there are enemy in range?

Duck1986

Question

Hi,

I'm relatively new to AoS having only played a couple of games with my friend who is in the same boat. I apologise if this has a blatantly obvious answer, but I've not been able to find anything definitive on it. I understand that in melee, the number of models that can attack are those within range, and that this leads to numerous techniques for "pile in" to maximise effectiveness but limit the attacks back.

If I surround 10 single-wound enemy models and I can reach 8 of them with my 1'' range from 12 of my army... if I by remarkable chance manage 10 damage, does this also damage the two that I cant technically reach, or do we stop counting wounds when we've taken away the amount we can reach?

In the same instance, if my friend shoots with fifteen handgunners but only five of the targeted unit are in the guns range, do we continue taking wounds for those outside the range?

Thanks in advance for clearing this up!
