Hey guys,

After a long stint of working hard I have come into a brief period of hobby time and wanted to start a project without a deadline. Before this all my projects had been thought up to take to an event or to get on the table. Now however I want something I can take my time with and improve my skills.

So without further delay, welcome to my Destruction blog.

Clan of the Wastes

The project is about creating an "army" of the creatures within the Destruction alliance to portray a neglected area of the mortal realms.

The Marshland is a desolate area comprised of water meadows, deciduous forests and the remains of a forgotten culture. It contains little in the way of natural resources to be exploited, too treacherous to be tamed and abandoned by all civilised society. What remains are the creatures, humanoids and monstrosities that have been chased away from conquered lands and their ancestral homes.

Now these tribes have united in a fragile allegiance to reclaim what was taken from them by men.

Sounding good so far [emoji4] Hope you didn't end up getting rid of too much of your beasties from before. I can think of an area I was planning in my fluff that was rather a marshland [emoji6]

I'm literally now trawling eBay for trolls and other beasties! Got three fimir from FW built and primed today and hoping to get a chance to throw some paint down tomorrow :)

Got called into work again today so only managed to start basecoating my first three minis.

Not much of an update but I absolutely love these fimir minis. These are going to be the start of my "Fimm" or warrior caste fimir. From the small amount of fluff available through the warp stone magazine, the castes have different skin tones. These will be a light brown with yellow flecks.

The one major bonus to investing in a race with very little lore is the huge opportunity to write your own fan fiction/ battle tome / audiobook where you are the only voice actor and every character is called joe as well as the narrator. I think I need a break from work...

Ok so I spoke too soon on the work front...

I managed to put a few more colours on the fimir tonight but In all honesty I'm tempted to strip the paint and start again.

The skin tone is very bland at the moment and I think the idea in my head is to brown.
The models are incredibly detailed and after such a long hiatus I am having trouble getting back into the flow of painting. Starting to consider benching these guys and painting 20 grots or savage orruks to get back into the swing of things.
Anyway, apologies for picture and painting quality, gonna sleep on it and see if I can salvage them or plan my next step

Yeah I'm a fan. Also they will stand out more against the other monsters, as they will likely be the only greenskins. What is your plan for trolls? The new warhammer tv blood bowl troll skin is fantastic, I'll give it a go when I do one.

That looks really nice! I think the first skin color was fine too, but the cloth was too similar to the skin.

Yeah agree entirely. I quite liked the colour but it would have just been lost under everything else.

So a little progress report.
Been taking my time painting the fimir as I really want to get better at painting. Also tried some proper basing for the first time in ten years of fiddling with the hobby. I think they look ok, however the flock is not fantastic and I would like the mud to be wetter and more realistic. Finally I also bought myself a little treat. Though it's probably going to gather dust for a bit until I can work out how I want to convert it all

Nice progress.  I think that the red and bright yellow and green in the flock may be a bit more cheerful than you might want for your fimir.
My first thought was autumn Sylvaneth regarding the base.

Yeah, will have to agree on that. I picked up one of the GW flock sets while I was passing through town on a whim and I'm not very happy with it. It looks very fake and as you said, the colours do not work. The red stands out so much and looks very synthetic

Hobby-challenged here but if you were to apply a suitable wash to the grass and base, would it stick and darken/grime it up?

Haven't tried it but I would assume it would clump up, will try it before I scrape it off and see what happens

Regarding the mud, you could try using some water effects or even gloss varnish to make it look wetter.

Been using gloss effect washes with some mixed success but you are bang on the money with that. Just waiting to get my hands on some next time i order stuff.

Hello all,

Time for a bit of an update.

Today I am going to try and do a bit of an accumulation of lore from the sparse library that we Fimir fanatics have access to. I am also going to be adding my own interpretations, assumptions and home brew lore to help flesh it out. The recent slew of homebrew battletomes being released on the forums has inspired me to try my hand at a collection of literature relating to the Fimm, with a view to turning it into a battletome/supplement project. For now however expect me to ramble here.

I must put a bit of a warning here. Some of the origins and reproduction of Fimir are fairly distasteful so if you are easily offended by such things its probably best to not carry on reading.

So initially 1D4Chan have a very good writeup of the known lore which can be found here: https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Fimir

I am mostly going to be using and building on the information found there to bring them into the AoS setting.

If you would like to join in, feel free to add, contest or critique anything posted here, I wont be offended. The aim is to flesh out an under appreciated race that deserve some love.

The Fimir - Characteristics

Fimir are a seldom seen race often thought of as creatures of myth within the Mortal Realms due to their nomadic nature and limited population. They are a humanoid species with reptilian characteristics, standing between  five and seven feet tall when standing straight. Their face is characterised by a  cyclopian eye with no pupil, small holes in place of ears, tusks and a beak. Fimir also have a scorpion like tail, usually ending with a boney mace like protrusion that can serve as a makeshift weapon. Skin colour is varied among the race, however the most common pigments range from yellowy brown through to green. The majority of Fimir are born hairless, save for the rarely born female of the race, a Meargh. Meargh are born sterile and cannot produce offspring and are characterised by lank hair and horns. The Fimir are a naturally stocky race who pride themselves on strength and size. A large gut is also a respected aspect, as it is within Ogre culture ( if there is such a thing!). Their long limbs end with three thick claws. Fimir lack depth perception due to their single eye and have no sense of smell, however they make up for this with a keen sense of taste and hearing, both of which are used to detect prey and to aid navigation.

Fimir are fond of tattoos both to denote social status, ritual iconography and merely for ones own pleasure. Clothing is usually an indicator of rank ( Nobles are often seen wearing capes for instance) and barring a few exceptions is rarely worn without a practical need for it.

Due to the Fimir women (the Meargh) being infertile, the race has to resort to enslaving human women to birth their offspring. While regarded as slaves most of these captured females are treated sternly but gently. Should they resign themselves to their fate bearing Fimir children they are treated well as befits such an important role within the clan and are allowed to travel ( with escorts) within the settlement. There has been occasions where women have come to a clan willingly to trade their life giving abililties for arcane knowledge. Those who resist however are bound, raped and spend the entire gestation period chained up inside a Fimir dwelling. The mortality rate of the human host is usually low  with the care of the clans Meargh and shearls, however if a Meargh is born, the mother is usually assured to die within childbirth due to horns of the creature.

More to be added to this and I will attempt to keep different aspects to separate posts

Hey @Mohojoe,

Nice blog so far. I enjoyed reading your trials and tribulations whilst sipping my Monday morning tea!

I actually really liked your first skin tone and think that if you'd stuck with that and done the cloth purple as per the newer versions it would've look great. That said, the green you've opted to go with is very nice as well.

The base needs some work, as you say. If you are looking to do muddy puddles then I would build up the bases as you have and then create shallow indentations to sit water effect into. I'm not sure what it'd look like to gloss the entire thing. I like the tufts you've used, as long as you change the static grass I think they'll work.

Keep up the good work.
